What you can do in France
Rock Climbing
- CéüseMay Jun Jul Aug SepWidely regarded as one of the finest sport climbing destinations in the world, Céüse's 1,600m band of grey-white limestone holds an extraordinary concentration of hard, sustained routes. Climbers travel from every continent to project at sectors like Berlin Wall and Biographie, but the 600+ routes include enough mid-grade lines that the mountain rewards a full range of ability. The 1.5-hour approach walk along a forested ridge filters out casual visitors.
- FontainebleauMar Apr May Sep Oct NovBouldering was born in this forest: climbed since the 1800s, first guidebook in 1945, and in 1946 the painted circuit was invented here, color-coded problem sequences that turn a forest into a curriculum and still exist nowhere else at this scale. More than 30,000 problems spread across the sandstone of Bas Cuvier, Franchard, and the Trois Pignons, one of the two world-standard bouldering grade scales carries the town's name, and the sport's whole culture treats a Font trip as a rite of passage. The kit list is a pad, shoes, and a train ticket: the forest is 40 minutes from Paris and free.

- BeauneApr May Sep Oct NovBeaune is the commercial heart of Burgundy, positioned at the midpoint of the Côte d'Or. From here, the grand cru vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Meursault, and Puligny-Montrachet are each within 30 minutes. The négociant cellars of Drouhin, Jadot, Faiveley, and Bouchard are in town and most offer structured tasting visits. Burgundy is where the concept of terroir, the idea that a specific vineyard site produces flavors no other site can replicate, is most rigorously practiced and most clearly demonstrated in the glass. For anyone who wants to understand wine at a deeper level than variety and vintage, this is the essential destination. The Hospices de Beaune charity auction in November is the single most important annual event in the wine world.
- BordeauxMay Jun Sep Oct NovBordeaux is the most systematically organized wine study environment in the world. The Cité du Vin (opened 2016) is a serious museum and tasting center with rotating exhibitions, structured workshops, and access to wines from across the globe, not just local châteaux. CIVB (the Bordeaux wine trade body) offers wine courses in English. WSET-approved schools in the city run Level 2 and Level 3 programs. Beyond formal coursework, the Médoc and Saint-Émilion appellations are navigable by bicycle and structured château visits, giving physical geography to the classification system (Premier Cru, Deuxième Cru, Grand Cru Classé) that no textbook delivers as clearly. Bordeaux is also a genuinely beautiful UNESCO World Heritage city, which makes rest days worthwhile.
- ChampagneApr May Jun Jul Aug Sep OctChampagne's story is distinct from every other wine region RTG covers, which is why it earns France a third wine pairing: the method itself, the maison-versus-grower tension, and the cellar cities, Gallo-Roman chalk crayeres 30 meters under Reims and 28 kilometers of Moet tunnels under Epernay, all UNESCO-listed. The education is institutional: Villa Bissinger in Ay is the region's own wine school, the International Institute for the Wines of Champagne, teaching public initiation courses through professional modules in an 80-seat amphitheatre above a pedagogical cellar of 250-plus references. Forty-five minutes from Paris by TGV, it is the most accessible world wine capital there is.
