The Tramontane's home beach on the Aude coast: wind about 300 days a year, the Mondial du Vent every April, and Tarifa-grade statistics without the crowds.
Why here
Leucate and La Franqui run on the Tramontane, which blows around 300 days a year at 30 to 60 km/h, statistics that match Tarifa with a fraction of the traffic, and the spot's standing is institutional: La Franqui has hosted the Mondial du Vent, France's premier wind-sports event, every April since 1996. The vast sand beach carves out dedicated school zones, FFVL-certified instruction is the local standard, and the flat-to-wave menu covers a first lesson through a strong rider's best session. It is the cheap, uncrowded answer to the obvious question of where Europe's wind actually lives.
Best months
April through October, with the Tramontane delivering year-round; summer adds thermal reinforcement and warm water. Big-wind days mean it: schools stand down above their thresholds and the pros come out.
Getting there & around
Fly to Perpignan (PGF), 30 minutes, or Montpellier (MPL), about 90. Schools sit on the La Franqui and Leucate beaches; book summer courses weeks ahead.
