Why here

Beaune is the commercial heart of Burgundy, positioned at the midpoint of the Côte d'Or. From here, the grand cru vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Meursault, and Puligny-Montrachet are each within 30 minutes. The négociant cellars of Drouhin, Jadot, Faiveley, and Bouchard are in town and most offer structured tasting visits. Burgundy is where the concept of terroir — the idea that a specific vineyard site produces flavors no other site can replicate — is most rigorously practiced and most clearly demonstrated in the glass. For anyone who wants to understand wine at a deeper level than variety and vintage, this is the essential destination. The Hospices de Beaune charity auction in November is the single most important annual event in the wine world.

Best months

September to November is the peak period. The harvest (vendange) in September and October is physically visible on the vine rows alongside the road, and many domaines open their cellars for tastings while the new wine is going in. The Hospices de Beaune auction (third Sunday of November) is the region's great annual event; accommodation books out months ahead for that weekend. Spring (April to May) is quieter and excellent for cycling the Route des Grands Crus. Summer is active with tourists; serious practitioners often prefer the cleaner atmosphere of spring or early autumn.

Getting there & around

Straightforward logistics

The nearest major airport is Lyon-Saint-Exupéry (LYS), 1.5 hours by road. TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon to Beaune takes 2.5 hours. Beaune itself is small, walkable, and well set up for wine visitors. A bicycle is useful for accessing the vineyards along the Côte. Most négociant cellars accept tasting visits with advance booking. Small independent domaines often require contact through an importer or a personal introduction; cold approaches in Burgundy work less well than in Bordeaux. Several wine education operators run structured multi-day programs that handle the introduction logistics.
