Canyoning in Verdon GorgeFR
Europe's deepest gorge — 25km of 700m-high limestone walls above jade-green water. Based out of Castellane or Moustiers-Sainte-Marie in Provence, the Verdon is simply the finest canyoning terrain on the continent.
Why here
The Gorges du Verdon is Europe's answer to the Grand Canyon — 25km of 700m-high limestone walls above jade-green water, and the continent's finest canyoning terrain. Unlike technical alpine canyons, the Verdon combines swims through narrow slots, abseils beside waterfalls, and dramatic cliff jumps in a setting of extraordinary scale. Based out of Castellane or Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, there are routes for all levels — from accessible half-day descents to full technical traverses that take guides two days. Nothing in Western Europe competes on scenery or variety.
Best months
The gorge is accessible May through September; EDF manages the dam above Castellane and water levels are generally predictable, though sudden releases are possible — operators track releases daily. Water temperature reaches 18-22°C in July-August. The Couloir Samson (the main canyon route) is cold and shaded for much of the day; a 5mm wetsuit is standard even in peak summer. Best conditions are June and September when water levels are lower and crowds thinner.
Getting there & around
Castellane (gateway town, 90 minutes from Nice or Aix-en-Provence) has multiple guide bureaus running daily descents. The Couloir Samson half-day program is the standard entry point (€45-65 per person). Full technical descents of the upper Verdon require prior canyon experience and cost €90-140. A rental car is necessary — Castellane has no rail link. Accommodation in Castellane or Moustiers allows two or three consecutive canyon days covering different routes.
