Surfing in HossegorFR
Europe's beach-break capital on the Landes coast, where an underwater canyon focuses Atlantic swell onto the sandbars of La Graviere and the French surf industry keeps its headquarters.
Why here
Hossegor is Europe's beach-break capital because of what you cannot see: the Gouf de Capbreton, an underwater canyon that funnels Atlantic swell straight onto the sandbars, producing La Graviere's world-tour-caliber barrels and La Nord's three-meter-plus walls. The French Surfing Federation is headquartered here, the surf industry's European offices line the town, and the autumn season is the show: North Atlantic lows meet lingering high pressure for long, clean swells in warm water and thin crowds. Summer flips the same beaches into learner mode, with camps and schools running the full Seignosse-Hossegor-Capbreton strip.
Best months
September and October are prime, big clean swell, warm water, contest season energy; June through August suits beginners. The sandbars move, so locals chase banks between the three towns; a car earns its keep.
Getting there & around
Fly to Biarritz (BIQ), 35 minutes, or Bordeaux (BOD), under two hours. Camps run April to October; book summer weeks a month or two ahead.
