Why here
Chamonix is mountaineering's spiritual address. Mont Blanc (4,808m), the Aiguilles Rouges, and the Haute Route all depart from here. IFMGA-certified guides are embedded in the town's fabric, this is where serious alpinists train and progress.
Best months
June–Sept for non-technical ascents. Mixed and ice routes extend to April–May for experienced alpinists. Acclimatisation at Aiguille du Midi (3,842m) recommended before attempting the summit.
Getting there & around
Geneva airport 90 minutes away. Guide booking should be done months in advance for peak season. Acclimatization and gear requirements add planning overhead.

Association Internationale des Guides du Mont Blanc
GuideThe Association Internationale des Guides du Mont Blanc, which trades as the Bureau des Guides du Mont-Blanc, is listed by the Syndicat National des Guides de Montagne among the guide bureaux at Chamonix. It was founded in 1975 by four guides, Patrice and Gilles Bodin, Patrick Cordier and Jean Afanassieff, and took its present name on admitting English, Italian and German members. The office is at 9 Passage de la Varlope in Chamonix and works with nine named guides plus part-time staff, all of whom it states are IFMGA certified. Summer work covers Mont Blanc ascents, mountaineering and climbing courses and glacier trekking; winter covers the Vallee Blanche, off-piste, ski touring and ice climbing.
Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix
GuideFounded in 1821, the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix is the oldest mountain guide company in the world and the original from which all others descend. Its guides hold the French Brevet d'Etat and are IFMGA/UIAGM certified to the international standard for high-mountain guiding. Programs span Mont Blanc ascents by multiple routes, technical rock and ice climbing in the Massif, ski mountaineering, and multi-day alpine traverses across all difficulty levels.
