Rock Climbing in FontainebleauFR
The birthplace of bouldering: 30,000-plus sandstone problems in a forest an hour from Paris, with the color-coded circuit system invented here in 1946.
Why here
Bouldering was born in this forest: climbed since the 1800s, first guidebook in 1945, and in 1946 the painted circuit was invented here, color-coded problem sequences that turn a forest into a curriculum and still exist nowhere else at this scale. More than 30,000 problems spread across the sandstone of Bas Cuvier, Franchard, and the Trois Pignons, one of the two world-standard bouldering grade scales carries the town's name, and the sport's whole culture treats a Font trip as a rite of passage. The kit list is a pad, shoes, and a train ticket: the forest is 40 minutes from Paris and free.
Best months
Friction is the game: October through April is the serious season, with spring and autumn the sweet spots; summer humidity kills the grip. Rain closes the sandstone for a day; the circuits mean every level always has a next problem.
Getting there & around
Train from Paris Gare de Lyon to Fontainebleau-Avon in 40 minutes; a car helps between areas, and crash pads rent in town. This is sport-distinct from Ceuse's cliffs: pads and problems, not ropes and pitches.
