Freediving in NiceFR
The birthplace of competitive freediving as a modern sport. AIDA International was founded in Nice in 1992, and Villefranche-sur-Mer bay provides the deep, thermocline-laden training environment where elite European freedivers train. For competitive and pre-competitive athletes.
Why here
For competitive freedivers — those pursuing national team selection, depth records, or elite certification — Nice is not optional: it is where the sport was born and where the European competition community trains. AIDA International was founded here in 1992, and the city remains embedded in the international circuit. Villefranche-sur-Mer bay, five minutes by boat from Nice harbour, offers protected deep water and the thermocline-laden Mediterranean conditions that coaches deliberately use to harden their athletes. Harder conditions here translate to easier competition elsewhere. Several elite clubs and schools serve the competitive training market. For everyone else: Kaş or Dahab offer better value, warmer water, and more accessible depth infrastructure.
Best months
Visibility 10-20m — lower than some Mediterranean sites due to coastal runoff. Water temp 13°C January-March, 21°C August-September. Thermocline from June onward: surface 20°C, below 15m drops sharply to 13-15°C — 5mm full wetsuit required year-round at training depth. Villefranche bay: protected from most wind directions, consistent flat-surface access. Depth available to 50m+ within a short boat ride from Nice harbour. Training conditions deliberately demanding — the cold thermocline is an intentional training element, not a flaw.
Getting there & around
Fly to Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE) — direct from all major European cities and well-connected via Paris CDG from North America. Clubs and schools (CIPA, BlueNery, Chango Diving) offer sessional training and course access — advance booking essential as groups are small. CIPA organises an annual depth competition at Villefranche. High cost of living: budget €150-200+/day including accommodation. July-August: warmer water surface temperature, higher tourist volume. Public transport adequate between city centre and harbour. No car needed for training base.
