What you can do in Indonesia
Freediving
- AmedApr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct NovJemeluk Bay drops from the beach to moorings set between 20 and 50 meters, so the deep line is a swim rather than a boat charter. That is unusual. Most freediving destinations put you on a boat before you see any depth. Three schools sit within a few hundred meters of each other on the same black-sand strip, teaching Molchanovs, AIDA and SSI, so you can switch systems or find a different coach without changing towns. The water is warm enough to train in a 3mm suit all year, and the same bay works for a first breath-hold and for a 40 meter constant weight attempt. Tulamben and the Liberty wreck are about 30 minutes up the coast for a day off the line.
- Gili IslandsMay Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct NovThe channel between Trawangan, Meno and Air drops past 150 meters within a 10 to 15 minute boat ride, so the Gilis offer real depth without a long transit. One of the first dedicated freediving schools in Indonesia is on Trawangan and trains through instructor level; Gili Air, quieter and 15 minutes away by boat, holds two more. The islands ban motor vehicles entirely, which makes the whole place walkable and unusually calm for a training block. Water sits near 28C and October and November are the window the operators themselves name.
- Nusa PenidaApr May Jun Jul Aug Sep OctNusa Penida is a marine encounter destination, and the mantas are the reason to come. Manta Point sits in a sheltered bay where oceanic manta rays congregate to feed, and encounter rates for freedivers are consistently high year-round. The Indian Ocean upwellings that make Nusa Penida's water nutrient-rich also attract Mola Mola (oceanic sunfish) from July to October. For freedivers wanting their first encounter with large pelagic animals, without extreme current or cold, this is the most accessible entry point in Asia. AIDA courses are available from Bali-based operators as day programs or multi-day packages, and Nusa Penida sessions are woven into most Bali freediving itineraries.
Scuba Diving
- Komodo National ParkApr May Jun Jul Aug SepThe only place on Earth where you can dive manta ray cleaning stations in the morning and watch Komodo dragons from a beach in the afternoon. Cold-water upwellings from the Indian Ocean fuel reef systems with exceptional fish density, and the range of dive environments, drift, wall, reef, muck, is unusually wide for a single park.
- Raja AmpatJan Feb Oct Nov DecMore fish species and coral diversity than anywhere else on Earth, Raja Ampat consistently registers more species per dive than the next-closest destination. Even the snorkeling here surpasses most destinations' scuba diving. Remote West Papua archipelago that remains genuinely difficult to reach, which has preserved its reefs in near-pristine condition.
- TulambenApr May Jun Jul Aug Sep OctThe USAT Liberty, a 120m US Army cargo ship torpedoed in 1942, lies just 30m from shore in 5-30m of water, encrusted in coral and surrounded by reef life. It is the most accessible major wreck dive in the world, and one of the best macro sites in Bali for pygmy seahorses, ghost pipefish, and nudibranchs.
Surfing
- CangguMay Jun Jul Aug SepCanggu offers warm-water beach breaks ideal for learning and progression, with Batu Bolong and Echo Beach within walking distance. The density of surf schools and instruction quality is exceptional for the price point.
- Lakey PeakApr May Jun Jul Aug Sep OctThe most accessible world-class wave outside Bali. Lakey Peak breaks left and right over a sand-bottom reef, unusually versatile and consistent. The crowd is experienced but the atmosphere is relaxed. Nearby Periscopes and Cobblestones offer quieter alternatives on the same swell.
- North and South MentawaisMar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep OctMacaronis, Lances Left, Rifles, and thirty other named breaks deliver perfect tropical surf with no beach crowd, because there is no beach to stand on. You live aboard a charter boat and surf when conditions align. The benchmark surf trip for experienced surfers.
- UluwatuMay Jun Jul Aug SepThe Bukit Peninsula packs more world-class reef breaks per square kilometer than almost anywhere. The long left-hander at Uluwatu peels from the cave and is among the best waves in the world when on. Padang Padang, Bingin, and Impossibles are all within 10 minutes.
Witness / Attend
- NyepiBaliMarNyepi is the only holiday on earth that silences an entire island: for 24 hours Bali's Day of Silence closes the airport, empties every road, dims every light, and asks everyone, Balinese and visitor alike, to stay within their walls while the island resets for its new year. The spectacle comes the evening before, when every village parades ogoh-ogoh, towering demon effigies built for months by neighborhood youth groups, through the streets in a riot of drums and torchlight before the monsters are burned. Nobody organizes this for tourists; it is the island's own ritual calendar, and a visitor simply gets to be inside it. The day of silence itself, stars over a blacked-out island, no engines anywhere, is the part people never forget.
- BorobudurMayWaisak at Borobudur is Buddhism's biggest night in Indonesia: monks and pilgrims walk the ritual procession from Mendut temple to the great stupa, circumambulate it under the Vesak full moon, and close the night by releasing thousands of paper lanterns over the ninth-century monument, one of the most photographed spiritual images in Asia. The celebration is organized by Walubi, the national Buddhist council, with the lantern release run as a ticketed, structured ceremony open to respectful visitors of any faith. Few events anywhere put you inside a living rite at a wonder-of-the-world monument; this one does it by moonlight.
Yoga Retreat
- Cangguyear-roundCanggu has the highest density of serious yoga studios and retreat centers outside of India. Styles range from Ashtanga to Yin, with week-long immersions, 200hr teacher trainings, and day-drop-in options all within a few square kilometers.
- Ubudyear-roundUbud is the cultural and spiritual heartland of Bali, a highland village ringed by terraced rice paddies, ancient temples, and a practitioner community that has been attracting seekers since the 1970s. Today it hosts some of Asia's most respected yoga shalas, Ayurvedic clinics, and meditation retreat centers. The cooler mountain air, vegetarian-friendly food scene, and near-total absence of beach distractions make it easier to sustain a real practice here rather than a holiday dabble. The concentration of world-class teachers, many of whom relocate to Ubud permanently, means the depth of instruction available far exceeds what most Western cities can offer.
