SW swell March–October, peaking May–August. Water 28–30°C, boardshorts. Most breaks are coral reef, shallow in spots. Consistent overhead to double-overhead in peak season. Wind usually light in the mornings.
Getting there & around
Fly to Padang (PDG), West Sumatra — via Jakarta (2 hours) or Kuala Lumpur from international hubs. Two onward options to the Mentawais: (1) Overnight public ferry from Bungus port, Padang to Muara Siberut or Sikakap: 10-12 hours, runs several times a week — usually included in land-based camp packages. (2) Charter speedboat from Padang: 3-4 hours, significantly faster and more expensive — used by liveaboard operations. Two accommodation models: land-based surf camps/resorts at specific breaks (Macaronis Resort, Kandui Villas, Rifles camp — each anchored to a particular wave); or liveaboard charter boats covering multiple breaks across North and South Mentawais over 7-14 days. Liveaboards offer more flexibility to chase swell direction across the island chain; land camps offer more comfort. Book 6-12 months ahead for peak season — operator capacity is strictly limited by the island's access constraints. Expedition-level preparation required: travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage (nearest hyperbaric chamber is in Padang), reef first-aid kit, adequate rupiah cash (no banking on the islands). Satellite phone or PLB advisable on liveaboards.
