Surfing in Lakey PeakID

Lakey Peak breaks both left and right over a sand-bottom reef. Consistent and powerful, a significant step up from Bali in quality and solitude.

$$ Mid-rangeLow crowdsModerate logistics

Why here

The most accessible world-class wave outside Bali. Lakey Peak breaks left and right over a sand-bottom reef — unusually versatile and consistent. The crowd is experienced but the atmosphere is relaxed. Nearby Periscopes and Cobblestones offer quieter alternatives on the same swell.

Best months

SW swell April–October. Water 27°C. Both-ways peak suits intermediate and above. Powerful when overhead — the left barrels hard on bigger swells. No dangerous reef at the peak, but surrounding areas are shallow.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly to Bali (DPS), then connect to Bima Airport (BMU) on Sumbawa Island via Garuda Indonesia or Wings Air (1.5-2 hours from Bali, via Mataram or direct). Road transfer from Bima to Lakey Peak: approximately 2 hours on sealed road by private car (arrange through your surf camp — most include airport pickup). Alternative routing: fly Bali to Lombok, then fast boat to Sumbawa's west coast, then road east — longer but scenic. Accommodation: basic losmen guesthouses and a small number of surf camps concentrated around the main breaks (Lakey Peak, Lakey Pipe, Periscopes, Cobblestones). Power from generators — evenings only at most camps. No ATM at Lakey Peak; bring sufficient rupiah from Bima or Bali. Very limited internet. This is a committed wave-hunting destination: the logistics thin out the crowd, which is part of the appeal. Book through a camp operator who coordinates transfers, meals, and guiding as a package (Lakey Peak Surf Camp, Sumbawa Surf Adventures). Combine with a day trip to Hu'u village for local context, or extend east toward Komodo if time allows.

The Peak Surf House

Outfitter

The Peak Surf House sits directly in front of the Lakey Peak A-frame, one of the most mechanically consistent and powerful waves in Indonesia, on the remote southern coast of Sumbawa. The property offers guided surf access to the cluster of breaks around Hu'u Bay, including Lakey Peak and the less-crowded Lakey Pipe. Transfer from Dompu connects to the domestic flight from Bali.
