Freediving in Nusa PenidaID
A small island southeast of Bali with the most reliable manta ray encounters in Asia. Indian Ocean upwellings create nutrient-rich water that keeps large pelagics resident year-round, and Manta Point is accessible as a day trip from Bali for freedivers of all levels.
Why here
Nusa Penida is a marine encounter destination, and the mantas are the reason to come. Manta Point sits in a sheltered bay where oceanic manta rays congregate to feed, and encounter rates for freedivers are consistently high year-round. The Indian Ocean upwellings that make Nusa Penida's water nutrient-rich also attract Mola Mola (oceanic sunfish) from July to October. For freedivers wanting their first encounter with large pelagic animals — without extreme current or cold — this is the most accessible entry point in Asia. AIDA courses are available from Bali-based operators as day programmes or multi-day packages, and Nusa Penida sessions are woven into most Bali freediving itineraries.
Best months
Visibility 15-30m, clearest April-October. Water temp 24-28°C; cold upwellings can drop this to 20°C at exposed sites like Crystal Bay — thin wetsuit or rash vest recommended. Manta Point: sheltered bay, mantas feed at the surface and to 10m, reliable year-round with highest density April-October. Crystal Bay: stronger current, cold upwellings, advanced swimmers only — Mola Mola July-October at 15-25m. Gamat Bay and Ped area: calmer conditions, good for beginner freediving practice. Currents between Nusa Penida and mainland Bali can be strong — experienced boat operators navigate this.
Getting there & around
Fast boat from Sanur, Bali: 30-45 minutes, multiple daily departures from multiple operators ($10-15 each way). Day trips from Bali-based freediving operators include boat transfer, guide, and equipment rental. Base in Nusa Penida directly: accommodation from basic guesthouses to mid-range resorts, mostly in the north (Ped, Toyapakeh). Scooter hire or private driver essential — roads are rough. No hyperbaric chamber on Nusa Penida; medical emergencies require return to Bali. Book ahead April-October — demand is high.
