Scuba Diving in Raja AmpatID
The most biodiverse marine region on Earth: over 1500 fish species and 75% of all known coral species. A remote West Papua archipelago accessible by liveaboard from Sorong or speedboat to island guesthouses.
Why here
More fish species and coral diversity than anywhere else on Earth — Raja Ampat consistently registers more species per dive than the next-closest destination. Even the snorkeling here surpasses most destinations' scuba diving. Remote West Papua archipelago that remains genuinely difficult to reach, which has preserved its reefs in near-pristine condition.
Best months
Visibility 15-30m. Water temp 27-30°C. Current varies dramatically by site — Cape Kri and Sardine Reef can have strong surge and drift; Melissa's Garden, Arborek jetty, and Blue Magic are very calm. Walking sharks (epaulette sharks) found in shallow bays — unique to the region. Wobbegong sharks, mantas at Manta Sandy and Manta Ridge, bumphead parrotfish schools, and walls of schooling fish at multiple sites.
Getting there & around
Fly to Sorong via Jakarta or Manado — typically 2 connections from international hubs. Speedboat from Sorong to Waisai takes 2 hours, then local boat to resort or guesthouse. Liveaboards from Sorong are the most effective way to cover multiple areas — book 6-12 months ahead. Accommodation ranges from basic guesthouses to upscale eco-resorts. No ATMs on the islands — bring cash. Conservation fees apply.
