Culinary / Cooking in BaliID
World-famous for surf, yoga retreats, and spiritual culture. Warm water, uncrowded outer reefs, and a thriving wellness scene.
Why here
Balinese cuisine is distinct from broader Indonesian food and deeply tied to ceremony, offering, and local agriculture. Market-to-table cooking classes, spice farm visits, and multi-day culinary immersions are widely available and genuinely instructive.
Best months
Year-round. Dry season (May–Sept) is more comfortable for market visits and outdoor cooking. Ubud is the culinary centre.

Casa Luna Cooking School
SchoolUbud's original Balinese cooking school, operating since 1992 under founder and cookbook author Janet DeNeefe. Classes begin with a market visit and move to the school in the garden of Honeymoon Guesthouse in central Ubud, where students prepare a full Balinese menu using fresh herbs, spices, and techniques drawn from both everyday and ceremonial cooking. The session ends at a communal table sharing the dishes prepared.
