Sanur is Bali's original kitesurfing hub — a protected reef creates a shallow flat-water lagoon ideal for learning, while consistent cross-shore thermal winds blow reliably through the dry season. Multiple schools operate along the same beach strip, and the relaxed village atmosphere makes it a better base than the surf-heavy breaks of Canggu for kiteboarders. The lagoon gives beginners a safe, controllable environment that most tropical kite spots can't offer.
Best months
Cross-shore thermal winds pick up April through October, averaging 15-25 knots during prime months (July-August strongest). The reef lagoon at low tide gives beginners a flat, shallow practice area. Water temperature sits around 28-30°C year-round. Wind drops mid-morning on some days — most schools schedule lessons for early morning or late afternoon.
Getting there & around
Sanur is 30 minutes from Ngurah Rai airport, 20 minutes from Seminyak. Most schools are along the main beach strip at Jalan Hang Tuah — easy to walk between them and compare on arrival. Equipment rental available without lessons for certified kiters. Most IKO-certified instructors based here.
