Freediving in Amed
Black-sand fishing villages on the northeast coast of Bali, where Jemeluk Bay drops to deep water a short swim from the beach.
Why here
Jemeluk Bay drops from the beach to moorings set between 20 and 50 meters, so the deep line is a swim rather than a boat charter. That is unusual. Most freediving destinations put you on a boat before you see any depth. Three schools sit within a few hundred meters of each other on the same black-sand strip, teaching Molchanovs, AIDA and SSI, so you can switch systems or find a different coach without changing towns. The water is warm enough to train in a 3mm suit all year, and the same bay works for a first breath-hold and for a 40 meter constant weight attempt. Tulamben and the Liberty wreck are about 30 minutes up the coast for a day off the line.
Best months
Amed faces north and sits in the dry-season lee, so April through November gives flat mornings and 20 to 40 meters of visibility. The northwest monsoon takes over from December through March, dropping visibility to roughly 10 to 20 meters and bringing rain and rougher afternoons. Wind builds through the day in any season, so training happens in the morning. Water sits around 27 to 29C. Currents inside Jemeluk are usually mild, but the point outside the bay can run. Tulamben, about 30 minutes up the coast, sits more sheltered when the monsoon puts surge into Amed, so it is the fallback on a bad December day. Treat it as a day trip rather than a base: it has one freediving school and little else, while Amed has the shops, the instructors and the accommodation.
Getting there & around
Amed is about three hours by car from Ngurah Rai airport in Denpasar on a winding coast road, so budget the transfer and arrive in daylight. Book courses directly with the school; all three are small and fill in high season. Accommodation runs from simple homestays to a few boutique places along the Jemeluk and Bunutan stretches. There is no hyperbaric chamber in Amed and the nearest is in Denpasar, which is the practical reason to dive conservatively here. ATMs exist but are unreliable, so carry cash.
