Paragliding in May

Billing, at 2,400m in Himachal Pradesh, is where the Paragliding World Cup has been held. The site offers some of the longest cross-country routes in Asia, with pilots regularly flying 60km or more over the Dhauladhar range. This is not a tandem tourist destination. It is a site for pilots who want to fly seriously in Himalayan conditions, with a small resident community that takes the technical side of the sport seriously. The landing zone at Bir is in a Tibetan refugee settlement, which adds an unusual cultural dimension: monasteries, good food, and a slow pace between flights.

Ask competition pilots where the weather never wastes a day and Krusevo keeps coming up. The town sits on a mountain rim above the vast Pelagonia valley, and the combination produces roughly 90 percent flyable days in season, steady 3 to 7 m/s climbs and long convergence lines that turn cross-country flying into a conveyor belt. The Paragliding World Cup has been here repeatedly, and the FAI European Championships land in 2026, yet outside competition weeks you often share the sky with a handful of pilots. Launches are gentle, landing fields are enormous and flat, and the cost of living makes a two-week flying trip cheaper than a long weekend in the Alps. For pilots working on thermaling and first cross-country distance, conditions this forgiving and this consistent barely exist anywhere else.

Sopot is widely rated the best free-flight site in Eastern Europe: a chairlift carries pilots to the 1,400-meter launch on the Stara Planina wall, thermals boil up off the Thracian plain below, and the ridge runs cross-country lines of a hundred kilometers and more along the Balkan chain, which is why international competitions keep coming back. The schools fly it year-round when weather allows, tandems need nothing but the weight range, and full courses from zero to license cost what a weekend course does in the Alps. The town below is workmanlike; the air above is the point.

Valle de Bravo is where the world's paraglider pilots spend the northern winter: the thermals fire nearly every day from December through February, reliability almost no other winter venue can claim, which is why the Monarca Paragliding Open runs here each season and why visiting pilots outnumber locals at El Penon, the world-class cross-country launch. The two-site system serves everyone: La Torre floats tandems over the town and lake for first-timers while El Penon feeds courses, clinics, and 100-kilometer flights. The town itself is a lakeside Pueblo Magico, and the monarch butterfly sanctuaries winter in the same mountains, same season.

Zlatibor's open, rolling plateau makes some of Serbia's most dependable tandem paragliding: launches from the Cigota ridge at 1,422 meters, gentle thermals over meadow and pine, and landings by the resort town below. The pilot bench is deep for a small country: the local operations are flown by pilots with four-figure tandem counts and insurance included, at prices that make a first flight an easy yes. The plateau's resort infrastructure, Serbia's favorite mountain retreat, means the non-flying half of a traveling pair has a full day of their own.

Harissa is where you fly the Lebanese coast. The ridge above Jounieh Bay, best known for the Our Lady of Lebanon shrine and the funicular that climbs to it, sits at around 650 meters straight above the sea, which makes it a natural launch for tandem paragliding. A flight lifts off the hillside near Harissa or neighboring Ghosta, tracks out over the curve of Jounieh Bay with the marinas and the coast road below, and drops slowly back toward the water, often passing close to the great statue on the ridge. No experience is needed, since you fly strapped to a professional pilot, and the flights are short and gentle rather than extreme, which makes this an easy first taste of free flight for most people. Half an hour north of Beirut, it is the most accessible airborne view of the mountains-meet-sea landscape that defines this stretch of coast.

Babadag Mountain rises 1,960 meters directly above a turquoise lagoon, giving Oludeniz one of the most distinctive launch-to-landing trajectories in paragliding. The flight path crosses above the Blue Lagoon, a protected natural park, before landing on Belcekiz Beach. Tandems dominate the scene and the landing zone is one of the busiest in the sport, but the mountain draws serious solo pilots too: the thermals are predictable, the views are genuinely remarkable, and the sheer verticality of the site makes it worth experiencing regardless of your level.

The ramp on Pedra Bonita launches you at 520 meters over unbroken Atlantic rainforest inside Tijuca National Park, with Pedra da Gavea alongside, Christ the Redeemer behind, and the sand of Sao Conrado beach as the landing strip. It may be the most scenery-dense ten minutes in free flight, and because the Clube Sao Conrado de Voo Livre has run the site for some fifty years, the operation around it, from weather calls to ramp marshals to licensed tandem pilots, is as settled as the view is wild. Hang gliders and paragliders fly from the same ramp, which almost nowhere else offers.

Kobala, the launch on the southern crest of the Julian Alps above Tolmin, is one of Europe's best-known cross-country paragliding sites and a regular Paragliding World Cup venue: reliable spring thermals feed flights of a hundred kilometers and more along the Soca Valley, with the emerald river below and the Adriatic haze on the horizon. The infrastructure matches the reputation, down to the summer parataxi shuttle that runs pilots from the Tolmin landing field back up to launch all day. Tandem passengers get the same air as the competition pilots, and nearby Lijak stretches the season at the valley's western end.

The Col de la Forclaz launch sits 1,100 meters above Lake Annecy, and the flight to the lakeshore is among the most photographed in the sport, turquoise water, the old town, and the Aravis massif as backdrop. The lake's thermal engine is predictable and powerful, making Annecy a summer training hub for European pilots and one of the continent's premier tandem destinations.

The Bernese Oberland is paragliding's greatest showroom. Launch from Beatenberg or Mürren, fly with the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau filling the horizon, and land on the green valley floor below. The altitude differential, consistent thermals off the limestone walls, and faultless infrastructure make this the world's most-run tandem corridor and a serious cross-country training ground.
