Paragliding in March

Billing, at 2,400m in Himachal Pradesh, is where the Paragliding World Cup has been held. The site offers some of the longest cross-country routes in Asia, with pilots regularly flying 60km or more over the Dhauladhar range. This is not a tandem tourist destination. It is a site for pilots who want to fly seriously in Himalayan conditions, with a small resident community that takes the technical side of the sport seriously. The landing zone at Bir is in a Tibetan refugee settlement, which adds an unusual cultural dimension: monasteries, good food, and a slow pace between flights.

Lake Atitlan is one of the most photographed lakes in the world, a flooded caldera nearly 300 meters deep ringed by the cones of San Pedro, Toliman and Atitlan and a scatter of Maya lakeside towns. Flying a tandem paraglider over it is the way to take the whole thing in at once. You launch from the ridges above Panajachel or San Pedro La Laguna, sitting in front of a pilot, and drift out above the blue water with the volcanoes on one side and terraced hills and villages on the other. Flights need no experience and last as long as the air allows, usually gentle morning thermals over the caldera rim. For anyone already at the lake for the villages, weaving and markets, it adds a completely different view of a landscape that is spectacular from every angle.

Lima is one of the only major cities on earth where paragliding is a downtown activity: the sea breeze hits the Miraflores clifftops and stands them up into a ridge-soaring machine, so pilots launch from a city park, soar past apartment towers and the malecon crowds, and land back where they started. The dedicated parapuerto in Raimondi Park runs tandem flights every afternoon with certified pilots, no experience needed, making it the easiest world-class flying experience to actually do: no travel day, no weather trek, just a ten-minute walk from your hotel to the sky.

San Felix, 40 minutes north of Medellin, is the main flying site: reliable thermals from a launch at around 2,600m, with the city's valley spread below. The flying community is tight-knit and internationally connected, with experienced European pilots wintering here to log hours at low cost. The ICP angle is that Medellin is a genuinely interesting city in its own right: the Metro cable cars, the neighborhood transformation story, the food scene, the Botero sculptures. It works well as a deliberate paragliding destination or as a serious add-on to a Colombia trip.

Merida is the adventure capital of Venezuela, and paragliding is its signature flight. The city sits in a deep Andean valley with the Sierra Nevada on one side and the Sierra La Culata on the other, which gives reliable thermals and a string of launch sites at different heights. The classic beginner flight is a tandem strapped in front of an experienced pilot: you launch from a ridge west of the city, such as La Trampa or Las Gonzales, or high up on the cable-car line at Loma Redonda, and glide down over patchwork farms, red-tiled villages and the green valley floor, with the snow line and Pico Bolivar above you. Flights range from a gentle sink of fifteen or twenty minutes to long thermic sessions when conditions are right. The same agencies that fly you can put together a week of rafting, canyoning and mountain trips, and Merida's low prices and student-town energy make it an easy place to spend time.

Pokhara sits at 900m in a valley surrounded by 8,000m peaks, with Annapurna and Machhapuchhre the most visible. The thermal conditions from Sarangkot ridge are well-documented, and the view during a flight stops pilots mid-air. The scene here is mature: several internationally certified instructors are based year-round, the lakefront landing zone is straightforward, and beginner, intermediate, and cross-country pilots coexist without the crowds you get in Europe. This is the rare place where the flying is serious and the cost of spending a week is genuinely low.

Valle de Bravo is where the world's paraglider pilots spend the northern winter: the thermals fire nearly every day from December through February, reliability almost no other winter venue can claim, which is why the Monarca Paragliding Open runs here each season and why visiting pilots outnumber locals at El Penon, the world-class cross-country launch. The two-site system serves everyone: La Torre floats tandems over the town and lake for first-timers while El Penon feeds courses, clinics, and 100-kilometer flights. The town itself is a lakeside Pueblo Magico, and the monarch butterfly sanctuaries winter in the same mountains, same season.

When the Alpine flying sites shut down for winter, Europe's pilots migrate to Algodonales: 300-plus days of sunshine, reliable thermic conditions from October through April, and a Sierra de Lijar launch with enough wind-direction options to fly most days that other sites write off. Two internationally registered schools have taught here since 2002, taking students from zero to licensed in about two weeks with BHPA and APPI ratings that travel home with them, and the thermals are famously shared with griffon vultures, which core the lift better than any instructor can describe it. The white-village setting supplies the rest days.

Signal Hill and Lion's Head provide urban launches with Table Mountain and the Atlantic as the backdrop. Flying in Cape Town means flying in one of the world's great natural amphitheaters, with the ocean on three sides and a 1,000m plateau defining the horizon. When the South Easter settles, ridge soaring above Camps Bay and Clifton is some of the most visually striking flying in the sport. The scene is small, technically demanding, and self-selecting: pilots who fly here know what they're doing, which keeps the sites from getting crowded.

Gudauri is the Caucasus's biggest tandem paragliding hub, and the signature product is the winter flight: launching from sites between 2,100 and 3,006 meters over the Cross Pass, pilots soar above the ski area's white bowls with the Military Highway switchbacking below, a view no lift ticket buys. Flights run seven to fifty minutes with 200 to 500 meters of thermal gain in summer, priced at a few hundred lari, and the established operators fly licensed pilots only, the leading outfit's chief instructor carrying over nine thousand flight hours and 6,700 tandems. Year-round flying in high-mountain air, an hour and a half from a capital city, is a rare combination.

The ramp on Pedra Bonita launches you at 520 meters over unbroken Atlantic rainforest inside Tijuca National Park, with Pedra da Gavea alongside, Christ the Redeemer behind, and the sand of Sao Conrado beach as the landing strip. It may be the most scenery-dense ten minutes in free flight, and because the Clube Sao Conrado de Voo Livre has run the site for some fifty years, the operation around it, from weather calls to ramp marshals to licensed tandem pilots, is as settled as the view is wild. Hang gliders and paragliders fly from the same ramp, which almost nowhere else offers.

The Remarkables provide the backdrop and the thermals. Queenstown is an adventure-sport hub where the infrastructure for paragliding is excellent: landing zones are well-managed, operators are professional, and experienced pilots can rent certified gear and fly independently. Coronet Peak and the Skyline Gondola sites offer genuine cross-country flying above Lake Wakatipu. The scenery is among the best in the sport anywhere. It is premium, it is busy in summer, and the combination of mountains, lake, and southern light makes the cost feel justified.
