The Mesoamerican barrier reef, the second largest reef system in the world, sits minutes from the harbour, so boats reach the walls, seamounts and coral gardens without a long ride, and the water is warm and clear year round. The island is famous for two things: some of the lowest prices anywhere to earn an Open Water certification, and a resident population of whale sharks that feed at the surface off the deep north shore, where spotter boats put snorkellers in the water with the largest fish in the sea. Beyond the training bays the diving has real range, from the sponge covered walls of the north side to the seamounts of Black Hills and Duppy Waters, and the town's dive shops cluster along one main street so you can walk between them and pick your fit.
