A small cobblestone town in the western hills of Honduras beside one of the greatest Maya cities, Copan is a UNESCO World Heritage site famed for the finest sculpture and hieroglyphic carving in the Maya world, and for the scarlet macaws that fly over the ruins.
Why here
Copan is the art capital of the ancient Maya, and standing in the Great Plaza among its carved stone is the reason to come. Where Tikal and Palenque overwhelm with scale, Copan overwhelms with detail: towering stelae carved almost in the round with portraits of its kings, the deep-relief Altar Q showing all sixteen rulers of the dynasty handing power down the line, and the Hieroglyphic Stairway, sixty-three steps and more than two thousand glyphs, the longest known text in the Maya world. Beneath the acropolis, archaeologists tunnelled to find the Rosalila temple preserved almost intact inside a later pyramid, its full-colour replica now the centrepiece of the on-site Museum of Maya Sculpture. Scarlet macaws, a bird the Maya revered here, wheel over the ruins in flashes of red and blue. This is Witness in the fullest sense, walking a court that a real dynasty ruled for four hundred years, read stone by stone by a licensed guide.
Best months
The archaeological park is open daily year-round, with the calmest weather and clearest skies in the dry season from about December to April. Mornings are cooler and quieter, before tour groups arrive and before the midday heat. A licensed guide is not required but transforms the visit, giving the carvings their dynastic context, and a separate ticket covers the acropolis tunnels. The site is a short, walkable distance from the town.
Getting there & around
Copan Ruinas town sits about a kilometre from the ruins and is reached by road from San Pedro Sula in roughly three hours, or as a short hop across the border from Guatemala. The town is compact and walkable, with guesthouses, cafes and guides' offices around the plaza. Buy park and museum tickets at the site entrance, and hire a guide there or book one ahead. Pair the ruins with the Museum of Maya Sculpture and the nearby macaw reserve.

Asociacion de Guias de Copan
GuideThe Asociacion de Guias de Copan is the association of licensed guides based at the main entrance to the archaeological park, where visitors hire a guide for the ruins and the Museum of Maya Sculpture. Its guides work in several languages, and the association won a national CANATURH tourism award for an audio-guide project. A guided walk takes in the Great Plaza stelae, the Hieroglyphic Stairway and the acropolis, giving the carvings the dynastic context that makes Copan legible.
Xukpi Tours
GuideXukpi Tours is run by Yobany Peraza, a licensed guide at the Copan archaeological park who specialises in Maya history and birding. He leads small walking tours of the acropolis, the ball court, the carved stelae of the ruling dynasty and the Hieroglyphic Stairway, the longest known Maya text, then the on-site Museum of Maya Sculpture with its full-colour replica of the Rosalila temple. Tours are booked directly and often extend to the outlying carved groups of La Pintada and Los Sapos.
