Freediving in Roatan
The largest of Honduras' Bay Islands, sitting directly on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Budget Caribbean reef and wall diving, whale shark encounters in spring, and PADI courses among the most affordable in the region.
Why here
Roatan sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef with walls that fall away close to shore, and it has a real freediving lineage: the Caribbean Cup was founded here in 2013 and drew record attempts for a decade. The main school runs a full course ladder across AIDA, Molchanovs, Apnea Total and PADI Freediver, and West End supports a second freediving operation. Costs are low by Caribbean standards, which makes a multi-week training block affordable in a way Bonaire and Kona are not.
Best months
December water sits around 27 to 28C, down from 29 to 30C in summer. The December variable is wind rather than rain. Between October and January the trades give way to occasional west and north winds, and a norther puts surface chop on the northwest shore where both freediving schools train. That matters more for line work than for scuba, because the south shore fallback is a boat solution rather than a depth-line solution. Conditions improve through December as the wet season passes its peak; January is the wettest month of the year. Visibility typically 12 to 18 meters in season and better on settled days.
Getting there & around
Fly into Juan Manuel Galvez International on Roatan, direct from Houston, Miami and Atlanta in season, or connect through San Pedro Sula. Most freediving happens out of West End and Sandy Bay on the northwest shore. The main school is based at Luna Beach Resort. The second option is a West End freediving school teaching AIDA, Molchanovs, SSI, CMAS and Apnea Total, run by a national-record freediver who also runs a scuba school at Half Moon Bay under a different name. The two brands share a booking number, so you reach the same person either way. Christmas and New Year fill the island, so reserve December accommodation early. Flying direct to the island avoids overland transfers on the Honduran mainland.
