Freediving in Utila
The smallest and most laid back of Honduras's Bay Islands, Utila is a backpacker and diver hub on the Mesoamerican barrier reef, long known as one of the cheapest places in the world to learn to dive and for the whale sharks that gather off its north shore.
Why here
Utila is one of the best places in the Caribbean to learn to freedive because the deep water comes to you. Just off the island's south shore the reef drops away into a wall, so a training line can hang in clear blue water only a short boat ride from the harbour, and the sea is warm and often glassy in the mornings. The island grew a serious freediving scene alongside its famous scuba shops, with a dedicated school running AIDA and Molchanovs courses and coaching depth on the same walls that draw the divers. Add the whale sharks that feed at the surface off the north shore, and Utila lets a freediver go from a first breath hold to real depth, and to a face to face pass with the largest fish in the sea, in one trip. It is affordable, unhurried and built around the water.
Best months
Water sits around twenty six to twenty nine degrees all year, so freediving runs in a wetsuit season-round. Mornings are usually calmest, before the afternoon breeze, and the south-shore wall gives depth close to a sheltered shore. Visibility is best in the drier months from roughly March to September. Whale shark encounters, by snorkel at the surface, cluster in the February to April and August to October windows.
Getting there & around
Utila is reached by a short flight from La Ceiba or the daily mainland ferry, and everything in town is walkable. Freediving is booked directly with the island's freediving school, which runs course groups of two or more and one-to-one crossovers, and can arrange accommodation. Courses start most days; bring nothing but swimwear, as gear is provided. Depth training is line-based off the south-shore wall a few minutes out by boat.

Freedive Utila
SchoolFreedive Utila is the world's first freediving training cooperative and Central America's first dedicated freediving school, teaching AIDA and Molchanovs courses from beginner to advanced plus crossovers. Run by its instructor team and led by trainers including Cindy Mom, it has certified more than three thousand students since opening. As a competitive centre it hosts the Static Vibes apnea event and coaches depth on the wall that drops close to the island's south shore.
