A boulder-strewn river tumbling out of the Pico Bonito rainforest to the Caribbean just outside La Ceiba, the Rio Cangrejal is the best whitewater in Honduras, lined with eco-lodges and forming the boundary between the Pico Bonito and Nombre de Dios national parks.
Why here
The Rio Cangrejal is where Honduras runs whitewater. The river drops out of the Pico Bonito massif through a granite gorge of house-sized boulders and clear green pools, and it marks the boundary between two national parks, so you raft with primary rainforest rising straight off both banks. The standard commercial run mixes read-and-run Class II and III with a handful of pushier Class IV drops, and outfitters scale the trip to the water level and the group, from a family float to a technical descent. It is warm-water rafting in deep jungle a short drive from the coast, with waterfalls and swimming stops between rapids, and the valley's cluster of eco-lodges means you can raft, hike into the parks and sleep beside the river without ever going back to town. For paddlers there are kayak courses and steeper creek lines when the levels come up.
Best months
The Cangrejal runs all year in a warm, forested gorge. Rainfall on the Pico Bonito slopes drives the levels, so the biggest, most continuous water comes in the wetter months from about June to December, while the drier months from February to May give lower, more technical, more beginner-friendly flows. Guides set the run to the day's level, and heavy rain can push the river up quickly and shorten the window on the harder rapids.
Getting there & around
The Cangrejal valley starts about twenty minutes by road from La Ceiba, which has an airport and Bay Islands ferries, and the paved road up the valley passes the eco-lodges and put-ins. Trips run half a day with a safety briefing, helmets and buoyancy aids provided, and most operators are based at riverside lodges where you can stay the night. The road is the eastern edge of Pico Bonito National Park, so rafting pairs naturally with a guided rainforest hike.

Jungle River Lodge
OutfitterJungle River Lodge sits directly on the Rio Cangrejal about eight kilometres from La Ceiba, between the Pico Bonito and Nombre de Dios national parks, and was one of the original rafting operators on the river. It runs its own outfit, Jungle River Tours, with daily raft trips plus bilingual guided jungle hikes into the parks and a canopy zip line. The lodge offers dormitory and private rooms, a riverside swimming pool and a restaurant, so guests can raft, hike and stay in one place.

OutfitterOmega Tours was founded in 1992 by a former member of the German national kayaking and rafting team and was the first whitewater company in Honduras. From its eco jungle lodge in the Cangrejal valley, between the Pico Bonito and Nombre de Dios national parks, it runs raft descents from gentle Class II up to Class IV, plus kayak courses, waterfall hikes and multi-day river expeditions. Guides are trained in swiftwater rescue, and the lodge grows its own food in on-site gardens.
