Scuba Diving in Roatan
The largest of Honduras' Bay Islands, sitting directly on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Budget Caribbean reef and wall diving, whale shark encounters in spring, and PADI courses among the most affordable in the region.

Budget Caribbean reef diving on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest in the world. PADI Open Water courses here are among the cheapest in the entire Caribbean. Whale sharks congregate at cleaning stations in spring, turtles are present year-round, and the wall diving off West Bay rivals anything in the region at a fraction of the cost.
Best months
Visibility 20-30m. Water temp 26-29°C. Currents mild to moderate at wall sites. West Bay Wall: reef and wall from 6-40m. Whale sharks: Mar-Apr at sites off the north coast, seasonal but reliable. Turtles year-round. Macro highlights: seahorses, frogfish, moray eels. Coral: healthy brain and star coral formations throughout. Nurse sharks resting under overhangs.
Getting there & around
Direct flights from Houston, Miami, Atlanta, and Toronto to Juan Manuel Galvez International Airport, Roatan. West End and West Bay have the highest concentration of dive shops, both walkable areas. Budget dive packages dominate the market. PADI Open Water certification among the most affordable in the Caribbean. Combine with Utila (30 min ferry), even cheaper, whale shark encounters year-round.

Coconut Tree Divers
SchoolA PADI 5-Star Instructor Development Centre on Half Moon Bay in West End, and the only shop in the bay that dives straight off its own dock. Coconut Tree runs four boat dives a day to more than 80 sites along Roatan's fringing wall, from Spooky Channel to Texas Reef. It is the island's only TDI technical and rebreather center, with a resident tec team, and its Go Pro Caribbean program takes divers from open water through instructor.

Roatan Divers is a certified Green Fins member and pairs that conservation focus with a fleet of four custom boats working off private docks. The small-group model suits divers who want individual attention on Roatan's walls and reefs, and courses run from beginner through divemaster and technical.
West End Divers
SchoolDiving Roatan's waters since 1991, West End Divers is the longest continuously operating shop in West End and a PADI 5-Star Dive Resort. More than 40 moored sites sit inside the Sandy Bay Marine Park, most a short boat ride from the shop's own dock, so surface intervals are spent back on the beach rather than at sea. Courses cover the full PADI ladder from first-timers to divemaster, with small groups the house style.
