Scuba Diving in Utila
The smallest and most laid back of Honduras's Bay Islands, Utila is a backpacker and diver hub on the Mesoamerican barrier reef, long known as one of the cheapest places in the world to learn to dive and for the whale sharks that gather off its north shore.
Why here
Utila is where a whole generation of backpackers first learned to dive, and it still runs on scuba. The Mesoamerican barrier reef, the second largest reef system in the world, sits minutes from the harbour, so boats reach the walls, seamounts and coral gardens without a long ride, and the water is warm and clear year round. The island is famous for two things: some of the lowest prices anywhere to earn an Open Water certification, and a resident population of whale sharks that feed at the surface off the deep north shore, where spotter boats put snorkellers in the water with the largest fish in the sea. Beyond the training bays the diving has real range, from the sponge covered walls of the north side to the seamounts of Black Hills and Duppy Waters, and the town's dive shops cluster along one main street so you can walk between them and pick your fit.
Best months
Diving is good all year with water around twenty six to twenty nine degrees. Whale sharks pass in two main windows, roughly February to April and August to October, feeding at the surface rather than on the reef, so encounters are by boat and snorkel. Visibility is best in the calmer, drier months from about March to September. The reef walls off the north shore are exposed to weather, so trips shift to the sheltered south side when the wind gets up.
Getting there & around
Utila is reached by a short flight from La Ceiba or by the daily ferry from the mainland, and the town is small enough to cross on foot. Dive shops line the main street and the waterfront, most offering shop-and-stay packages that bundle courses or fun dives with accommodation. Bring certification cards for fun diving; courses run continuously so you can start most days. Book whale shark trips flexibly, as they depend on sightings from the spotter boats.

Alton's Dive Center
OutfitterAlton's Dive Center sits on the waterfront in the centre of Utila and dives more than sixty sites along the Mesoamerican barrier reef, the second largest reef system in the world after Australia's. A PADI shop with its own dock, on-site accommodation and a training pool, it runs courses from beginner Open Water through divemaster and lends guests free kayaks and paddleboards. Its boats work the north-shore reef walls and the seasonal whale shark grounds off the island's northern coast.

It has trained divers for more than twenty years and runs the full ladder from Open Water through instructor, plus technical courses under its GoTEC arm. Boats reach the reef walls and seamounts of the Mesoamerican barrier reef within minutes, and the shop coordinates whale shark trips with spotter boats off the north shore in season.
