The lagoon at Abu Tig Marina is flat, relatively sheltered, and served by well-organized, accredited schools; the Red Sea resort infrastructure means accommodation, restaurants, and diving are all within the same planned town. For European kitesurfers seeking a reliable summer destination that is warmer than Morocco, closer than Brazil, and more varied than a flat-water-only camp, El Gouna is the answer. The afternoon-only nature of the wind (mornings are flat) means trips can include morning water sports, diving the Red Sea reef, or a day trip to Luxor (3.5 hours by road) without missing a session.

The Aswan-to-Esna run takes four to five days of riverbank life, fishermen hauling nets, temple mornings before the buses arrive, dinners on deck at anchor, restoring the pace that made the Nile the original great journey. Between sails, Aswan itself offers felucca hops around Elephantine Island, the Nubian villages, and the staging point for Abu Simbel. It is antiquity travel with the engine, and the crowds, turned off.

Abu SimbelFeb OctThe Abu Simbel Sun Festival is the world's oldest scheduled event: 3,200 years ago Ramses II's engineers aligned his temple so that on February 22 and October 22, his coronation day and his birthday, dawn light travels sixty metres through the mountain to illuminate the seated gods at its heart, leaving only Ptah, lord of darkness, in shadow. The alignment survived even the temple's block-by-block relocation in the 1960s, and on festival mornings thousands gather before dawn, folk troupes perform in the forecourt, and the sun keeps a pharaoh's appointment to the minute. No other event on the calendar was fixed by an ancient astronomer and still runs on time.
