Freediving

An entire global community of freedivers has made Dahab their extended base: two-week stays are the norm, not the exception. Multiple AIDA and Molchanovs schools operate on the Mashraba waterfront, the cost of living is extremely low by any standard, and the daily rhythm of dive, eat, rest, repeat is embedded in the town's culture. This is the destination for when serious progression is the priority. Note: the Blue Hole arch at 56m has a poor safety record, approached gradually by experienced freedivers only.

The main operator runs a dedicated freediving station off Marsa Shagra with up to four lines to a maximum of 40 meters, staffed by a full-time AIDA instructor. That is a purpose-built depth setup rather than a scuba center selling a freediving course on the side. The reef here is in better condition than the Hurghada and Sharm coasts because development came later and much of it is low-rise camp rather than resort strip.
Kitesurfing

It is a shallow, tide-dependent flat-water box of roughly 300 by 500 meters, waist to chest deep across most of it, which is the most forgiving setup a new kiter can learn in: you can stop, stand up and reset instead of swimming after your gear. Egypt has windier and better-known kite towns in El Gouna and Hurghada, and a rider chasing big days should go there instead. What Dahab has is a lagoon you can learn to ride in before lunch and a Bedouin dive town you can freedive, climb or do nothing in for the rest of the day, at prices the Red Sea resorts stopped offering years ago. It is a place to acquire the skill, not to prove it.
- El GounaApr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct NovEl Gouna is Egypt's planned resort town on the Red Sea, and the kiting here runs on the famous Doctor wind, a reliable afternoon thermal that builds from noon and peaks between 2pm and 5pm at 15-25 knots on most clear days from April through November. The lagoon at Abu Tig Marina is flat, relatively sheltered, and served by well-organized, accredited schools; the Red Sea resort infrastructure means accommodation, restaurants, and diving are all within the same planned town. For European kitesurfers seeking a reliable summer destination that is warmer than Morocco, closer than Brazil, and more varied than a flat-water-only camp, El Gouna is the answer. The afternoon-only nature of the wind (mornings are flat) means trips can include morning water sports, diving the Red Sea reef, or a day trip to Luxor (3.5 hours by road) without missing a session.

Its season opens in September and runs to June, strongest from September through March, which means it is ramping up exactly as the Mediterranean shuts down. The riding is a large shallow lagoon in the deep south of the Egyptian Red Sea, far enough from the resort coast that the water is empty. October is the build: the wind is establishing rather than peaking, and the camp is filling rather than full. The tradeoff is stark and worth stating up front. This is a single-camp destination, so you are buying one operator's judgment, one kitchen and one set of gear for the length of your stay.

Better than eighty percent wind certainty runs March through October, the water is flat and shallow across a wide area, and October is the last month of that window. What makes it unusual is the shape of its year: most centers here close from November to March, so this is a spot with a hard season rather than a soft one. Two operations run on the beach, which is the minimum for a place worth sending someone to, and the flat shallow water makes it a strong first-time destination.

The north to north-northeast trade runs down the Red Sea and the desert behind adds a morning thermal on top of it, which produces better than eighty percent wind certainty from May through October and an unusually early start to the riding day. October is the last month of that peak. The lagoon is shallow and flat over a large area, so it teaches beginners well, and there is deeper water outside for anyone who wants chop and height. Two established centers work the bay, one VDWS and one IKO, so you can pick your system.
