Kitesurfing in Ras Sudr

Why here
Ras Sudr is the Gulf of Suez squeezed into a wind funnel, and it is the closest reliable kitesurfing to Cairo. Better than eighty percent wind certainty runs March through October, the water is flat and shallow across a wide area, and October is the last month of that window. What makes it unusual is the shape of its year: most centers here close from November to March, so this is a spot with a hard season rather than a soft one. Two operations run on the beach, which is the minimum for a place worth sending someone to, and the flat shallow water makes it a strong first-time destination.
Best months
The funnel effect through the narrow northern Gulf of Suez is what produces the consistency, and it also means the wind is often side-onshore and steady rather than gusty. The water is shallow enough to stand over most of the riding area, which is the main reason beginners come. October closes the season, and the drop-off after it is abrupt rather than gradual: most centers shut for the winter, so a November booking is a different and much thinner destination. Air cools noticeably by late October and a shorty is sensible. This is a functional spot rather than a beautiful one, and the surroundings are industrial desert coast.
Getting there & around
Drive about two hours from Cairo, which is the normal approach, or fly into Sharm el-Sheikh and drive roughly three and a half hours up the Sinai coast. Accommodation is a small cluster of camps and hotels attached to the kite centers rather than a town, so you book a package and stay where you ride. There is very little to do here that is not kitesurfing, which is worth knowing if you are traveling with someone who does not kite. Egypt requires a visa for most nationalities. Instruction is in Arabic and English, with other languages depending on the season's instructor roster.
