Kitesurfing in Dahab
A former Bedouin fishing village and global diver pilgrimage. The Blue Hole is the famous site, but the real draw is cheap year-round diving with immediate deep-water shore access and a thriving divemaster training community.
Why here
Dahab is known for the Blue Hole, but the lagoon at the south end of town is the reason to bring a board. It is a shallow, tide-dependent flat-water box of roughly 300 by 500 meters, waist to chest deep across most of it, which is the most forgiving setup a new kiter can learn in: you can stop, stand up and reset instead of swimming after your gear. Egypt has windier and better-known kite towns in El Gouna and Hurghada, and a rider chasing big days should go there instead. What Dahab has is a lagoon you can learn to ride in before lunch and a Bedouin dive town you can freedive, climb or do nothing in for the rest of the day, at prices the Red Sea resorts stopped offering years ago. It is a place to acquire the skill, not to prove it.
Best months
Wind is thermal and builds through the day, so mornings run light and the afternoons deliver. May to September is the reliable season, with June and July the windiest at better than 90 percent, though those months also sit at 32 to 39C and the heat becomes the limiting factor rather than the wind. April and September hold 70 to 80 percent and make the better learning window. March and October are calmer and comfortable, good for progression without the crowds. Winter falls to 40 to 60 percent and wants a 10 to 14 meter kite, against 7 to 9 meters in summer. The lagoon is tide-dependent, so ask the center about the water before you rig: at low water it shrinks and the shallow end gets too thin to ride.
Getting there & around
Fly to Sharm el-Sheikh, direct from the UK and most European cities, then a bus or shared service taxi to Dahab, 90 minutes and roughly 10 to 15 dollars. The kite lagoon sits at the south end of town, separate from the Mashraba and Assalah waterfront where the dive schools, freediving centers and most budget accommodation are. Centers on the lagoon rent and store gear and teach in several languages. Worth understanding the accommodation split before booking: the large all-inclusive resorts sit outside the core along the coast road rather than in town, so staying at one means a taxi in and out every time you want the waterfront, the dive shops or dinner. Staying in Assalah or Mashraba puts you walking distance from the town but a short taxi or tuk-tuk from the lagoon. Choose based on which of the two you plan to do more of. No car is needed either way. ATMs are limited, so bring dollars or euros.

SchoolIndependent watersports center at the Ganet Sinai Hotel, running since 2003 and covering kitesurfing, windsurfing, wing foil, SUP and yachting. Rental and instruction on Cabrinha equipment, open year-round. The most local-feeling of the lagoon operations and the one most likely to have space in the shoulder months.
Harry Nass Dahab
SchoolVDWS center directly on the Dahab kite lagoon, teaching kitesurfing, windsurfing and wing foiling from first lesson to advanced, with foil kiting on request. Carries a large Cabrinha rental fleet, monitored board storage and a classroom on site, and issues VDWS certification. Instructors teach in several languages and run a radio rescue system on the water, which matters for intermediates who cannot yet hold height.
ION CLUB Dahab
SchoolThe Dahab Boarder Center, part of the international ION CLUB network of watersports stations. Sits on the lagoon offering kitesurf lessons, rental and storage alongside windsurfing and wing foiling, with the standardized equipment pool and multilingual instruction the network is built on. A good option for riders who already know the network from its other Red Sea and Mediterranean stations.
