Kitesurfing in Soma Bay

Why here
Soma Bay is a twenty-knots-at-nine-in-the-morning kind of place. The north to north-northeast trade runs down the Red Sea and the desert behind adds a morning thermal on top of it, which produces better than eighty percent wind certainty from May through October and an unusually early start to the riding day. October is the last month of that peak. The lagoon is shallow and flat over a large area, so it teaches beginners well, and there is deeper water outside for anyone who wants chop and height. Two established centers work the bay, one VDWS and one IKO, so you can pick your system.
Best months
The wind pattern here is worth understanding before you book: it is often up early and can soften in the late afternoon, which is the reverse of the thermal-driven spots in Brazil. Plan to ride in the morning and eat late. October closes the high-certainty window, so it is a reliable month rather than a gamble, but November onward drops off. The lagoon is shallow enough to stand across much of the riding area, and the bottom is sand rather than reef where the schools operate, though reef exists further out and is a real hazard if you drift. Water stays warm into October and most riders are in a shorty at most.
Getting there & around
Fly into Hurghada, about 45 minutes north by road. Soma Bay is a resort peninsula rather than a town, so accommodation is hotels and the centers operate from hotel beaches, with visitor rates for non-guests. That structure is the main thing to weigh: it is comfortable and well organized, and it is not a village you can wander. Instruction is available in English, German, Arabic, French and Italian across the two centers. Egypt requires a visa for most nationalities, obtainable on arrival or online, and it is worth confirming current requirements close to travel.
