Javna Ustanova Pula Film FestivalPulaJulThe Pula Film Festival is Croatia's oldest, running since 1954, and its main screen is the reason to come: films play inside the first-century Pula Arena, a Roman amphitheatre that held some 23,000 spectators and ranks among the six largest surviving anywhere. The 2026 edition, the seventy-third, runs July 9-16 with more than 150 screenings across ten-plus venues and the Golden Arena national awards, sixty years after the competitive format began. Watching a premiere under a two-thousand-year-old limestone ellipse, with the harbor behind the screen, is one of European cinema's singular settings.

Zagrebyear-roundZagreb claims more museums per capita than most European capitals, and two of them justify the trip alone. The Museum of Broken Relationships in the Upper Town grew from a 2006 art project into a permanent museum by 2010 and won the European Museum of the Year's Kenneth Hudson Award in 2011: crowd-donated objects of ended relationships, each with its story, a concept so exportable it has a sister branch in Chiang Mai. Across the river in Novi Zagreb, the Museum of Contemporary Art holds some 12,000 works with around 600 on display in its purpose-built 2009 building, including the Exat 51 geometric abstraction that made Zagreb a mid-century avant-garde node.

Festival Dalmatinskih Klapa OmisOmisJun JulKlapa, Dalmatia's multipart a-cappella singing, joined UNESCO's intangible heritage list in December 2012, and Omis is its institutional home: the Festival of Dalmatian Klapas has run here since 1967, staging its sixtieth edition in 2026 on St. Michael's square. The format is competitive and serious, new-song nights, mixed ensembles, and the male and female finals in mid-July, with the harmonies bouncing off stone walls built by actual pirates. Between festival nights, klapa breaks out unscheduled in konobas along the whole coast; Omis in early July is simply where you hear it at concert pitch.

Rock Climbing

The Klanci narrows at the canyon entrance stack short, well-bolted sport routes a two-minute walk from the road, while Anića kuk rises 350 meters above the trail with some of the best long, moderate multi-pitch climbing in Europe. Around 600 equipped routes run from grade 3 to 9a, so a mixed-ability group never runs out of options. The setting seals it: you climb in the morning, and the Adriatic is a ten-minute drive from the crag, which makes this one of the few world-class venues where a climbing trip and a beach holiday genuinely coexist. The scene peaks around the international Big Wall Speed Climbing meet each spring, but the canyons stay workable most of the year.

Sailing

Within a week's sail of the ACI marina: Hvar, Vis, Brac, and the 89-island maze of Kornati National Park. That fleet supports real sail training, not just handovers. Ultra Sailing, founded in 1995 by Olympic sailor Emil Tomasevic, runs its Croatian ministry-approved program from Split's marinas, and Yacht Sail Training, an RYA Recognised Training Centre on Brac 25 minutes away by catamaran, takes students from Competent Crew through Yachtmaster prep in the same waters they will later charter. Arrive a novice, leave with the license and the cruising ground already familiar.

Scuba Diving

The signature dive is a B-17G Flying Fortress that ditched offshore in November 1944, sitting upright at 65 to 72m and considered one of the best-preserved WWII aircraft wrecks in the world; a B-24 Liberator lies nearby, making Vis a rare double aircraft-wreck destination. Around the headline wrecks: walls, caves, Roman-era amphorae fields, and the clear water Komiza's fishermen have worked for centuries. The deep aircraft are technical dives, but recreational divers get honest reward at ordinary depths, and both local centers train from beginner through full trimix.

Trekking / Hiking

Northern VelebitJun Jul Aug SepThe Premuzic Trail is a fifty-kilometer dry-stone masterpiece, built 1930 to 1933 under forestry engineer Ante Premuzic, that contours the karst crest of Velebit almost gradient-free through the rock towers of Rozanski kukovi, with the Adriatic and its islands in view for much of the route. It is Croatia's only true hut-based trek, anchored by the Zavizan and Alan huts on the classic two-to-three-day crossing, and it doubles as a stage of the Via Dinarica White Trail. The engineering is the marvel: a path through some of Europe's most broken limestone that never asks for your hands, only your days.

Whitewater Kayaking / Rafting

ZrmanjaApr May Jun Jul Aug SepThe Zrmanja runs a ten-to-twelve-kilometer canyon through the Velebit Nature Park past a staircase of travertine waterfalls, including the eleven-meter Veliki buk, and access is a rarity in itself: solo paddling is banned inside the park, so the agency-run descent from Kastel Zegarski is the only way onto the water. The river runs two seasons in one: April and May snowmelt brings raftable high water, then the summer drop turns the same canyon into guided kayak descents with daily departures through September. Around fifty-five euros buys four to five hours in a gorge an hour from Zadar that most beach traffic never learns exists.

Wildlife Safaris

Kopacki RitApr May Jun Sep OctKopacki rit, where the Drava meets the Danube in Croatia's far-east Baranja corner, is one of Europe's largest preserved floodplain wetlands, protected as a nature park since 1967 and Ramsar-listed since 1993. Some 290 bird species have been recorded, with white-tailed eagles and black storks the headline residents, and the autumn red-deer rut adds a mammal spectacle most European wetlands lack. The park institution runs its own boat safaris four times daily from the Sakadas quay, forty-five minutes for twelve euros, and the eco-centre at the northern entrance adds canoe safaris and birdwatching days from a former estate building.

Wine / Spirits Education

PeljesacMay Jun Jul Aug Sep OctDingac, a band of 45-degree slopes dropping straight to the sea on Peljesac's southern flank, became Croatia's first legally protected wine appellation in 1961 and remains the benchmark site for Plavac Mali, the offspring of Zinfandel's Croatian ancestor. The peninsula's cellar doors are producer-led rather than classroom-led: Matusko in Potomje pours flights above 2,000 square meters of barrel cellar, and Grgic Vina in Trstenik was founded in 1996 by Miljenko Grgich, whose Chateau Montelena chardonnay won the 1976 Judgment of Paris before he came home to prove Plavac Mali could stand with it. No WSET school operates here; the education is vineyard and cellar, poured by the families who farm the slopes.
