Why here

Istria has emerged as one of Europe's most compelling food and wine regions — producing world-class olive oil (multiple consecutive world titles) and distinctive indigenous wines, most notably Malvazija Istarska as the signature white and Teran as the robust, tannic red. Vinistra, the international wine fair held in Poreč each May, is the showcase event: over 200 producers, open to the public, set in a peninsula of medieval hilltop towns and Adriatic coastline. The September-October harvest season adds truffle hunting in the Motovun forest — one of Europe's most significant white truffle sources.

Vinistra wine fair in Poreč: 3-4 days in mid-May — 200+ producers, publicly accessible, tastings included in entry. Harvest season September-October is arguably better for estate visits and truffle season (peak October). Summer (July-August) is peak coastal tourism — crowds on the coast, but the hilltop towns remain relatively calm. May and September-October are ideal for food and wine visitors.

Getting there & around

Straightforward logistics

Fly into Pula (Istria's main airport, with direct flights from many European cities in summer) or Trieste in Italy (1 hour by road to Poreč). A rental car is essential for reaching the hilltop villages and estates — Motovun, Grožnjan, and Rovinj are not well-served by public transport. Poreč and Rovinj are the two best coastal bases; Motovun for the truffle and wine heartland inland.
