Wildlife Safaris in Kopacki Rit
The Danube-Drava floodplain in Baranja, one of Europe's largest preserved wetlands, patrolled by white-tailed eagles and rutting red deer.
Why here
Kopacki rit, where the Drava meets the Danube in Croatia's far-east Baranja corner, is one of Europe's largest preserved floodplain wetlands, protected as a nature park since 1967 and Ramsar-listed since 1993. Some 290 bird species have been recorded, with white-tailed eagles and black storks the headline residents, and the autumn red-deer rut adds a mammal spectacle most European wetlands lack. The park institution runs its own boat safaris four times daily from the Sakadas quay, forty-five minutes for twelve euros, and the eco-centre at the northern entrance adds canoe safaris and birdwatching days from a former estate building.
Best months
April to June for spring floods and nesting, September to October for the deer rut and raptor traffic. Boat safaris require reservation. Summer mosquitoes are serious, bring repellent and mean it.
Getting there & around
Half an hour from Osijek, which has domestic flights and rail; the park quay at Sakadas is the hub. Baranja wine cellars fill the evenings.
