Whitewater Kayaking / Rafting in Zrmanja
A travertine canyon river in Velebit's shadow where solo paddling is banned, so the guided descent past the falls is the only way in.
Why here
The Zrmanja runs a ten-to-twelve-kilometer canyon through the Velebit Nature Park past a staircase of travertine waterfalls, including the eleven-meter Veliki buk, and access is a rarity in itself: solo paddling is banned inside the park, so the agency-run descent from Kastel Zegarski is the only way onto the water. The river runs two seasons in one: April and May snowmelt brings raftable high water, then the summer drop turns the same canyon into guided kayak descents with daily departures through September. Around fifty-five euros buys four to five hours in a gorge an hour from Zadar that most beach traffic never learns exists.
Best months
April to May for high-water rafting, June to September for kayak descents on the clearer low water. Swimming ability required, no prior paddling needed. The travertine is sharp, so wear the provided footwear.
Getting there & around
