Paragliding in Gudauri
Georgia's biggest ski area, entirely above the tree line on the Military Highway, with a freeride reputation and lift passes under 25 euros.
Why here
Gudauri is the Caucasus's biggest tandem paragliding hub, and the signature product is the winter flight: launching from sites between 2,100 and 3,006 meters over the Cross Pass, pilots soar above the ski area's white bowls with the Military Highway switchbacking below, a view no lift ticket buys. Flights run seven to fifty minutes with 200 to 500 meters of thermal gain in summer, priced at a few hundred lari, and the established operators fly licensed pilots only, the leading outfit's chief instructor carrying over nine thousand flight hours and 6,700 tandems. Year-round flying in high-mountain air, an hour and a half from a capital city, is a rare combination.
Best months
Year-round: December to March for snow flights over the ski area, June to September for long thermal flights. Wind cancels days, keep schedule slack. No experience needed for tandems, just warm layers.
Getting there & around
Launch sites sit beside the resort and the Cross Pass viewpoints; operators meet at the hotels. Combine with a ski day in winter, the flight takes two hours door to door.
