Paragliding in Lake Atitlan
Lake Atitlan is a deep volcanic caldera lake in the western highlands of Guatemala, ringed by three volcanoes and a string of Maya villages, where tandem paragliders launch from the hills above Panajachel to fly out over the water.
Why here
Lake Atitlan is one of the most photographed lakes in the world, a flooded caldera nearly 300 meters deep ringed by the cones of San Pedro, Toliman and Atitlan and a scatter of Maya lakeside towns. Flying a tandem paraglider over it is the way to take the whole thing in at once. You launch from the ridges above Panajachel or San Pedro La Laguna, sitting in front of a pilot, and drift out above the blue water with the volcanoes on one side and terraced hills and villages on the other. Flights need no experience and last as long as the air allows, usually gentle morning thermals over the caldera rim. For anyone already at the lake for the villages, weaving and markets, it adds a completely different view of a landscape that is spectacular from every angle.
Best months
Mornings are usually the calmest and most reliable window, before the wind picks up over the lake later in the day. The dry season from November to April gives the steadiest flying weather and clearest views of the volcanoes; the rainy months bring afternoon cloud and cancellations. Flights depend entirely on wind and are called on the day. The launch sites sit well above the lake, so there is a short drive up before take-off.
Getting there & around
Tandem flights are arranged directly with the pilots, usually by WhatsApp, and confirmed the morning of, since everything depends on the wind. Panajachel is the main hub, reached in about three hours from Antigua or Guatemala City by shuttle, with launch sites in the hills above town and above San Pedro La Laguna. Wear closed shoes and layers for the higher launch, and allow flexibility in your schedule in case a flight is pushed to another morning for weather.

Asociacion Departamental Vuelo Libre Solola (ADVLS)
ClubThe Asociacion Departamental Vuelo Libre Solola is the departmental free-flight association for Solola and appears in the Guatemalan national free-flight directory current for 2026 at Calle de los Arboles 0-42, zona 2, Panajachel, on the north shore of Lake Atitlan. It runs paragliding courses covering aerodynamics, micro-meteorology, free-flight theory and air traffic, followed by ground handling and supervised flights. Its named launch site is the ramp at San Andres Semetabaj on the lake's eastern rim, and it also flies at Santa Elena Barillas outside the department. The association organises spot-landing and cross-country competitions.
Real World Paragliding
GuideReal World Paragliding is a small team of professional pilots flying tandem paragliders over Lake Atitlan, launching from the hills above Panajachel and San Pedro La Laguna. Passengers ride in front of a certified pilot on flights that cross above the caldera lake and its volcanoes, with no experience needed, and the team also guides visiting solo pilots to the local flying sites. Mornings are usually calmest, and flights are arranged by WhatsApp on the day.
