Wine / Spirits Education
- Goriska BrdaApr May Jun Sep Oct NovGoriska Brda sits on the Slovenian side of Collio, and it is the heartland of the orange-wine revival: skin-macerated Rebula that spends months on its skins in ways the region never stopped doing while the rest of the world forgot, now covered by Decanter and Suckling as a region in its own right. The education is winemaker-led by design. Movia has been in the Kristancic family since 1820 and runs biodynamic cellar visits where the philosophy arrives with the pour, and Klet Brda, Slovenia's largest cellar, unites four hundred growing families and opens the historic de Baguer cellar for structured tastings. Reservation-only, small-room, and argued over glasses; the tourist bus does not stop here.
- MariborMay Jun Jul Aug Sep OctMaribor keeps the world's oldest producing grapevine on its riverfront: the Guinness-certified Zametovka on the Lent embankment is around 450 years old and still yields 35 to 55 kilograms of grapes a year, bottled in quarter-liter artist-designed bottles that mayors give to visiting heads of state. The Old Vine House beneath it pours wines from 55 Stajerska producers with the old vine's own variety by the glass, and under the city center Vinag 1847 runs one of Europe's largest classical cellars, 2.1 kilometers of tunnels over 15,000 square meters, toured in ninety minutes with tastings. September brings the three-day Old Vine Festival and its ceremonial harvest.
- Vipava ValleyApr May Jun Sep OctThe Vipava Valley is Slovenia's natural and orange-wine heartland and its windiest wine district, scoured by the bora that keeps the vineyards dry and the sprays away, and it grows indigenous whites found almost nowhere else: Zelen and Pinela, alongside Rebula. Where neighboring Goriska Brda tells a Collio border story, Vipava's is one of native varieties and low-intervention pioneers, tasted in family cellars along one of the country's largest wine roads. Certified local operators run four- to six-hour tastings, including hike-and-wine and bike-and-wine formats with valley-wide pickup, so the terroir arrives on foot as well as in the glass.

- PlanicaMarPlanica is the birthplace and spiritual home of ski flying: more than forty world records have been set on the Gorisek brothers' flying hill, and the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup traditionally closes its season here each March with four days of flights approaching 250 meters in front of tens of thousands of Slovenes for whom this is the national sporting holiday. The valley under Ponca is a natural amphitheatre, the finals Saturday is the loudest crowd in Slovene sport, and tickets stay cheap by World Cup standards because the event belongs to the public. Outside race week the Nordic Centre runs a museum and a zipline down the flying hill itself, which is the closest a civilian gets to the jumpers' view.
- PtujFebKurentovanje is Slovenia's largest carnival, staged in its oldest town since 1960 around a figure far older: the Kurent, a sheepskin-clad, cowbell-belted demon who goes door to door driving out winter, a rite inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list in 2017. For ten days around Shrovetide the town fills with Kurent groups from across the region, ethnographic parades, and the international carnival procession that draws tens of thousands, all under a castle above the Drava. The 2027 edition runs February 3-9; between editions, Ptuj's Roman stones and wine cellars carry the rest of the year.
