Why here
Planica is the birthplace and spiritual home of ski flying: more than forty world records have been set on the Gorisek brothers' flying hill, and the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup traditionally closes its season here each March with four days of flights approaching 250 meters in front of tens of thousands of Slovenes for whom this is the national sporting holiday. The valley under Ponca is a natural amphitheatre, the finals Saturday is the loudest crowd in Slovene sport, and tickets stay cheap by World Cup standards because the event belongs to the public. Outside race week the Nordic Centre runs a museum and a zipline down the flying hill itself, which is the closest a civilian gets to the jumpers' view.
Best months
The World Cup finals run four days, Thursday to Sunday, in the second half of March: March 18-21 2027 per the published calendar, with the 2028 slot to confirm when FIS publishes. Book Kranjska Gora valley lodging far ahead of finals week. The museum and zipline operate year-round.
Getting there & around
Shuttle buses run from Kranjska Gora during the finals; the valley is under two hours from Ljubljana. General tickets are walk-up affordable; finals Saturday sells out.
