Mountaineering / Summits in MojstranaSI

The quiet mountaineering village at the mouth of the Vrata valley, gateway to Triglav's mighty north face and home of the Slovenian Alpine Museum.

Why here

Every Slovene is supposed to climb Triglav once, and Mojstrana is where the serious routes start. Three valleys, Vrata, Kot and Krma, run from the village toward the 2,864-meter summit, including the walk past Triglav's north face, a kilometer-high wall that anchors the country's entire alpine tradition. The standard two-day guided ascent climbs to the Kredarica hut and finishes the summit ridge on protected via ferrata cables, which puts Slovenia's highest point within reach of fit hikers who have never roped up. The village itself keeps the culture honest: the Slovenian Alpine Museum sits here, local IFMGA guides run the mountain, and the hut network means you sleep at 2,515 meters with the summit an hour away at dawn. It is a first 'real summit' with none of the expedition overhead.

Best months

The guided season runs late June to the end of September, with July through September the most reliable window. Snow lingers on the summit ridge into early summer and returns by mid October. The final ridge is exposed via ferrata, straightforward in good weather and unforgiving in storms, so guides hold the weather call. August brings the biggest crowds to the Krma route and the huts; September is the connoisseur's month with stable air and empty trails. Winter ascents run with guides for experienced parties only.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly into Ljubljana, about 45 minutes by car, or base in Bled or Kranjska Gora, both within 20 minutes and offered as pickup points by local guides. Guided two-day ascents include technical gear for the via ferrata sections; you bring boots and layers. Hut half-board at Kredarica runs around 65 euros for non-members and beds fill fast in August, which is why guided departures book weeks ahead in peak season. Group departures run twice weekly through summer, private ascents anytime conditions allow.

Guide

A Mojstrana-based guiding agency founded in 2011 by professional mountain guide Gregor Kofler, running Triglav ascents with IFMGA guides from the village at the mountain's doorstep. Group two-day climbs depart twice weekly in summer from the Krma valley, with private one- and two-day options from Kot and Vrata for parties who want the quieter lines. Winter Triglav ascents, ski touring and broader Julian Alps guiding round out the program. Pickup from Bled or Kranjska Gora included.
