Wildlife Safaris in Loska Dolina
The Notranjska valley an hour from Ljubljana where Europe's densest brown-bear forests meet eye-level photography hides.
Why here
The Notranjska and Kocevska forest belt holds around a thousand brown bears, one of the densest populations in Europe, and the Loz Valley has turned that into the continent's most professional bear-watching setup an hour from Ljubljana. The specialist operator runs some two dozen eye-level photography hides across eight forest locations, with bean-bag mounts and multi-day packages that photographers fly in for, while the valley's visitor centre offers two- to three-hour evening observation sessions capped at four adults for travelers who want the encounter without the telephoto kit. May to September is the season, spring bringing mothers with cubs to the meadow edges.
Best months
May to September; hides are entered in the afternoon and left after dark in silence. Sightings are probable, never promised, and the operators say so plainly. Children ten and up on the guided observation sessions.
Getting there & around
Stari trg pri Lozu is an hour from Ljubljana by car; the operators arrange hide transfers. Combine with the Cerknica intermittent lake and Krizna Jama on the same plateau.
