Nicaragua
Central America
Central America's largest country, a land of lakes and volcanoes on the isthmus between the Pacific and the Caribbean. The Pacific southwest holds a world-class surf coast and Spanish colonial cities at Granada and Leon, the Cordillera los Maribios strings active cinder cones behind Leon, twin volcanoes rise from Lake Nicaragua at Ometepe, and the northern highlands around Matagalpa grow shade-coffee in cloud forest.

What you can do in Nicaragua
Surfing
- PopoyoMar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep OctPopoyo is the anchor of Nicaragua's Pacific surf coast, and its draw is consistency. The gap in the mountains at Lake Nicaragua acts like a wind tunnel, pushing offshore breezes out to sea for a large share of the year, so the reef here is clean and holding shape when other coasts are blown out. The main reef break works through a wide range of tides and sizes, from waist-high runners to serious overhead days, and the outer bommie handles the biggest southern-hemisphere swells that arrive in the wet season. Around it sit Beginner Bay for first-timers, plus beach breaks and points reachable by boat or short drive, so a mixed-ability group can all score. This is a place to log real hours in warm water without the crowds of more developed surf towns, with local guides who read the reef and shuttle you to whatever is firing that morning.
- San Juan del SurJan Feb Mar Apr Nov DecSan Juan del Sur is where most people learn to surf in Nicaragua. The town itself sits on a sheltered bay, so the surf happens on the beaches strung along the coast: Playa Maderas and Playa Remanso to the north for beginners and intermediates, Playa Hermosa and others for those pushing on. Sand-bottom beach breaks mean softer wipeouts than a reef, and daily shuttles run from town to whichever beach has the best bank that day. The same Lake Nicaragua wind gap that grooms Popoyo reaches down here, keeping mornings clean before the onshore fills in. Add a walkable town with schools, board rental and an easy social scene, and it is the natural first stop on a Nicaragua surf trip, with room to graduate onto heavier waves as you improve.
Trekking / Hiking
- Cerro NegroJan Feb Mar Apr Nov DecCerro Negro is a short, sharp hike with a payoff you cannot get anywhere else. The cone is the youngest volcano in Central America, born in an 1850 eruption and still active, and its slopes are loose black ash with no vegetation. You carry a board up a 45-minute to one-hour walk to the rim, taking in the raw Maribios volcano chain and the plain toward Leon, then sit or stand on a reinforced sled and slide straight down the ash face. Volcano boarding was invented here in the 2000s and remains a rite of passage on the Central American backpacker trail, with riders clocking speeds well past 50 kilometres an hour on the steepest line. The walk is manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness, and the descent takes seconds, which is the whole absurd charm of it.
- Isla de OmetepeJan Feb Mar Apr DecOmetepe is one of the great volcano treks in Central America, two very different climbs on a single island in the largest lake between the Great Lakes and Titicaca. Concepcion is the harder, taller line: a roughly ten-hour round trip that starts before dawn, opens onto huge lake views, then turns steep and loose near the active summit where cold wind and scree test your nerve. Maderas is the greener, more forested option, an eight-hour climb from Balgue up through farmland and cloud forest, past pre-Columbian petroglyphs, to a crater lagoon inside the summit, with howler monkeys and parrots along the way. A local guide is mandatory on both, which is a good thing, because the trails are muddy, unmarked in places and seriously steep. For hikers who want a real objective rather than a viewpoint stroll, Ometepe delivers two.
