Trekking / Hiking in Isla de Ometepe
A figure-eight island in Lake Nicaragua formed by two volcanoes, Concepcion and Maderas, joined by a low isthmus. Concepcion is a near-perfect active cone with a demanding summit climb; Maderas is dormant and cloaked in cloud forest with a crater lagoon at the top and a UNESCO biosphere reserve on its flanks.
Why here
Ometepe is one of the great volcano treks in Central America, two very different climbs on a single island in the largest lake between the Great Lakes and Titicaca. Concepcion is the harder, taller line: a roughly ten-hour round trip that starts before dawn, opens onto huge lake views, then turns steep and loose near the active summit where cold wind and scree test your nerve. Maderas is the greener, more forested option, an eight-hour climb from Balgue up through farmland and cloud forest, past pre-Columbian petroglyphs, to a crater lagoon inside the summit, with howler monkeys and parrots along the way. A local guide is mandatory on both, which is a good thing, because the trails are muddy, unmarked in places and seriously steep. For hikers who want a real objective rather than a viewpoint stroll, Ometepe delivers two.
Best months
The dry season from December to April gives the firmest footing; wet-season trails turn to slick mud and the cloud can close in on Maderas. Both hikes are long, hot and steep, with Concepcion the more exposed and technical near the top. Start at dawn, carry more water than you think you need, and wear grippy footwear. Guides are compulsory and easy to arrange through island lodges and operators.
Getting there & around
Ometepe is reached by ferry from San Jorge near Rivas to Moyogalpa or San Jose del Sur, about an hour on the water. Concepcion is usually climbed from the Moyogalpa side, Maderas from Balgue and Merida in the south. Roads on the island are rough and public transport is slow, so most trekkers arrange a guide plus transfer as a package, or rent a scooter to reach the trailhead.

GuideOmetepe Trails is run by Eric Henriquez, an island-native nature guide who leads treks up both Concepcion and Maderas as well as gentler walks to Charco Verde, the petroglyphs and Ojo de Agua springs. He guides in excellent English, covering the island's geology, history and cloud-forest wildlife, and builds multi-day itineraries with access to local farms and a coffee plantation. The outfit has no website and books by email or phone, with a long run of strong traveller reviews.
