Surfing in San Juan del Sur

Nicaragua · Central America

A horseshoe bay town on Nicaragua's southern Pacific coast, the country's main surf-tourism hub. The town beach is calm, but a string of exposed beach breaks a short drive north and south, led by Playa Maderas and Playa Remanso, gives the area a spread of waves that suit learners and improvers.

Why here

San Juan del Sur is where most people learn to surf in Nicaragua. The town itself sits on a sheltered bay, so the surf happens on the beaches strung along the coast: Playa Maderas and Playa Remanso to the north for beginners and intermediates, Playa Hermosa and others for those pushing on. Sand-bottom beach breaks mean softer wipeouts than a reef, and daily shuttles run from town to whichever beach has the best bank that day. The same Lake Nicaragua wind gap that grooms Popoyo reaches down here, keeping mornings clean before the onshore fills in. Add a walkable town with schools, board rental and an easy social scene, and it is the natural first stop on a Nicaragua surf trip, with room to graduate onto heavier waves as you improve.

Warm water year-round. Mornings are typically the cleanest, with offshore or light wind before the sea breeze builds in the afternoon. The dry season from November to April brings the most settled conditions and easiest beach access; the wet season pushes bigger swell but muddier roads. Maderas and Remanso are the go-to learner beaches, both a short shuttle from town.

Getting there & around

Straightforward logistics

San Juan del Sur is about two and a half hours from Managua and close to the Costa Rica border crossing at Penas Blancas, so it slots easily into an overland trip. The surf beaches are a fifteen to thirty minute shuttle over dirt roads; nearly every school and hostel runs board-and-transport packages. You do not need your own vehicle to surf here.

Beyond the Dream Surf

School

Beyond the Dream Surf was founded in 2019 by Manuel, a Nicaraguan ISA-certified instructor, and Hanna from Canada, on a jungle-fringed property just outside San Juan del Sur. It teaches beginner surf lessons and runs guided surf tours to the area beaches, plus stand-up paddleboard instruction and surf-and-stay packages. The ISA certification and small owner-run setup mean lessons are led by a credentialed local who has taught across several of the region's surf schools.

Tribu Surf

School

Tribu Surf is a local surf school and shop based at Playa Hermosa, about fifteen minutes south of San Juan del Sur, with a storefront in the town centre. Lessons run in group, semi-private and private formats, each built around roughly ninety minutes of instruction split between beach theory and water time so beginners get the fundamentals before paddling out. The shop handles board rental and shuttles, and the small class sizes mean coaching stays hands-on for first-timers and improvers alike.
