Scuba Diving in Little Corn Island
A tiny car-free island off Nicaragua's Caribbean coast, ringed by coral reef and reached by panga boat from Big Corn Island. Warm, clear water and healthy reef make it the country's main scuba destination, with resident nurse sharks, eagle rays, turtles and seasonal hammerheads.
Why here
Little Corn is the quiet, car-free counterpoint to Nicaragua's Pacific surf coast, and its reef is the reason divers make the long trip out. The island has no roads or motor vehicles, so you walk everywhere and dive from small boats onto reef that sits minutes from shore. The water is warm and generally clear, and the sites hold nurse sharks, eagle rays, stingrays, turtles and big schools of tropical fish, with hammerheads showing up on the deeper walls in season. Because the island is small and low-key, dive operations run tight groups and can take newer divers from their first breaths through to certification without the conveyor-belt feel of a big resort. For a Caribbean reef trip that still feels off the map, with certifications, fun dives and snorkelling all on the doorstep, Little Corn is the pick.
Best months
Water is warm year-round. Visibility and sea state are usually best from roughly March to May and again from August to October; the Christmas winds from late December into February can churn the surface and cut boat access on the exposed side. Reef sits from shallow snorkelling depth down to walls in the thirties of metres. Operators run small groups and enforce no-touch reef etiquette on healthy but fragile coral.
Getting there & around
Getting there is the effort: fly or take the long boat from the mainland to Big Corn Island, then a roughly 30-minute panga crossing to Little Corn, which can be rough and wet in windy weather. There are no vehicles on the island, so you walk between your lodging and the dive shop. Build in buffer days around the panga schedule and weather, especially in the windy season.

Dolphin Dive
SchoolDolphin Dive is the Corn Islands' longest-running dive shop, family-owned and operating on Little Corn for around 25 years as a 5-star PADI Dive Resort. It teaches the full PADI ladder from Open Water and Advanced through Rescue Diver and Divemaster, alongside fun dives for certified guests. The operation keeps groups small, with a stated maximum of four students per instructor and six divers per guide, and runs a strict no-touch policy to protect the reef.
Las Palmeras Dive Center
SchoolLas Palmeras Dive Center is a family-run, multilingual PADI dive shop on Little Corn Island that also operates its own small hotel. It runs Discover Scuba intro dives, Open Water and Advanced Open Water courses through to Divemaster, plus guided fun dives on the surrounding reef where eagle rays, hammerheads, turtles and dolphins are among the regulars. The multilingual staff and combined dive-and-stay setup make it a straightforward base for divers coming to the island for several days.
