A protected beach and wildlife refuge about 18 kilometres south of San Juan del Sur, one of only a handful of mass-nesting arribada beaches for the olive ridley sea turtle. Between roughly July and February, tens of thousands of turtles come ashore over a few nights to lay eggs.
Why here
Playa La Flor is one of the rare beaches on earth where olive ridley sea turtles nest in an arribada, the synchronised mass arrival where thousands of females haul out over the same handful of nights. It is one of only two arribada sites in Nicaragua, and across a season well over a hundred thousand nests can be dug into this single strip of protected sand. Standing among that many nesting turtles, or watching a wave of hatchlings scramble for the surf under red light, is a genuine wildlife spectacle rather than a zoo encounter. The refuge is ranger-managed with strict rules to keep the turtles safe, so you go at night with a guide, keep white light off the beach and stay back from the animals. It is seasonal, weather-dependent and never guaranteed, which is exactly what makes catching an arribada feel earned.
Best months
Arribadas run from about July to February and cluster around the new moon, when the beach is darkest and safest for the turtles, with the biggest arrivals often in the August to November window. Tours go at night and follow ranger rules: no white light or flash, no touching, and stay behind the guides. Nothing is guaranteed on any given night, so operators watch the moon and reports and advise when a run looks likely.
Getting there & around
La Flor is a rough 18-kilometre drive south of San Juan del Sur, and the refuge charges an entry fee on top of the tour. Almost everyone visits on an evening tour from San Juan del Sur that bundles transport, the ranger fee and a guide, leaving town in the evening and returning late at night. The access road is slow and can be muddy in the wet season, so an organised tour is far easier than driving yourself.
