You rope down a sheer basalt cliff right beside the Maletsunyane Falls, the spray drifting across the rock and Bearded and Cape vultures riding the thermals off the gorge below. No experience is needed. The day before the main descent you train on a 25-metre practice cliff near the lodge to learn the ropes and rig, so that by the time you step backwards off the 204-metre ledge the movements are familiar even if the drop never stops feeling enormous. More than seven thousand people have now done it. There is no dedicated abseil category on the site, so this sits under Canyoning as the closest fit, but it is pure vertical rope work beside a waterfall rather than a canyon descent. Semonkong itself, reached over high passes about four hours from Maseru, is worth the trip on its own for the falls, the pony trekking and a town where ponies still outnumber cars.

The Basotho pony, a hardy crossbreed brought to the mountains in the nineteenth century, is stout, calm and astonishingly sure-footed on the goat tracks and passes that link the villages, and for centuries it has been the everyday transport of a nation of horsemen. From Malealea Lodge, local Basotho guides lead rides that range from a couple of hours to multi-day trips sleeping in village huts, following paths to waterfalls, San rock-art shelters and viewpoints over the Makhaleng gorge. You do not need to be an experienced rider; the ponies are patient and the pace is walking, which makes this as much a cultural journey through working villages as an equestrian one. This sits under Horse Riding and Equestrian, the closest fit for a tradition that Basotho would simply call pony trekking. Evenings back at the lodge bring a village choir and band playing home-made instruments around the fire.

The Roof of AfricaMaseruSepThe Roof of Africa is the oldest and most feared hard-enduro race on earth, first run in 1967 and known to riders simply as the Mother of Hard Enduro. Over three days it sends competitors 250 to 350 kilometres across the Maloti Mountains at altitudes from 1,400 metres to above 3,000 metres, up rock gardens, dry waterfalls and passes that break machines and riders in equal measure, and it now forms a round, often the finale, of the FIM Hard Enduro World Championship. The 2026 edition runs from 24 to 26 September, based near Matsieng about 45 minutes from Maseru, the capital and the natural gateway for spectators and support crews. This sits under Motorcycle Adventure Touring, the closest fit for an event that is really elite off-road racing rather than touring, and it is flagged as such. For visitors it is a rare chance to watch world-class hard enduro in one of the most dramatic mountain arenas anywhere, with the added draw that the same passes and villages can be explored more gently by bike or 4x4 before and after the race.

The village grew up around the first mission station in the country, established in 1833, which brought the printing press, the first Sesotho books and a seminary, and it remains the intellectual and cultural cradle of the nation. At its centre is the Morija Museum and Archives, opened in 1956 and the oldest museum in Lesotho, whose collections run from Basotho ethnography and the history of the kingdom to the geology of the surrounding hills, including dinosaur footprints and fossils found in the sandstone nearby. The archive is the official repository of the country's oldest church and a magnet for researchers. For a visitor, Morija is a quiet, walkable counterpoint to the adventure elsewhere in Lesotho: an afternoon among the collections and the old mission buildings, a short walk out to the dinosaur trackways above the village, and a craft shop selling Basotho work. It is easy to reach on the main highway south from Maseru and pairs naturally with Thaba-Bosiu for anyone wanting to understand how the Mountain Kingdom came to be.

It is the only road link between KwaZulu-Natal and the eastern highlands of the Mountain Kingdom, and the last stretch is 4x4-only, low-range work with sheer drops and no barriers, which is exactly why the climb has become a bucket-list drive rather than just a border crossing. The reward at the summit is the plateau of Lesotho itself, treeless and enormous, plus the Sani Mountain Lodge bar, billed as the highest pub in Africa. Weather makes every trip different: cloud can swallow the pass in minutes, and in winter snow closes it altogether. Most travellers go up with a guided 4x4 operator from the South African side, stopping at a Basotho homestead and the little Sani Top church, though experienced drivers with the right vehicle and paperwork can tackle it themselves. Either way it is one of the great mountain roads of Africa.

Skiing & Snowsports

AfriskiJun Jul AugAfriski is Africa's only operating ski resort, and skiing here is a genuine novelty rather than a compromise. The resort sits at about 3,050 metres in the Maluti Mountains, just below the Mahlasela Pass at 3,222 metres, high enough that the winter cold and snowmaking hold a run of piste from June to August while the rest of Southern Africa is dry and brown. The ski area is small, roughly 1.8 kilometres of groomed slope served by a drag lift and a rope tow, so this is not the Alps, but it is a real snow mountain with a ski and snowboard school, hire shop and a floodlit night-ski session, and the altitude and mountain light make it memorable. Southern-Hemisphere winter, June to August, is the only window for snow. Out of season Afriski flips to a high-altitude base for hiking, mountain biking, trail running and fly fishing. Because it sits on the tarred A1 near the top of the Moteng and Mahlasela passes, it is also one of the more accessible corners of the Lesotho highlands, about four and a half hours from Johannesburg.

From the valley floor on the Hlotse River, routes range from the gentle Lower Trail to the Black Pool, an easy riverside walk, up to the demanding 16-kilometre Circular Route that climbs above 2,600 metres for long views over the Maluti range and down onto the che-che bush, one of the last indigenous woodlands left in a country that is otherwise almost treeless. The park is quiet, the air is thin and clean, and you share the paths with little more than the odd herd boy and his dogs. Most walkers base themselves at Maliba Lodge, Lesotho's only five-star mountain ecolodge, which sits at the trailheads and provides local guides who know the routes and can arrange the same trails on horseback. It is an easier, greener introduction to the Mountain Kingdom than the abseils and passes elsewhere, and a good base for multi-day walks deeper into the range.

Thaba-BosiuMar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct NovThaba-Bosiu, the Mountain at Night, is where Lesotho began. In 1824 King Moshoeshoe I established his stronghold on this flat-topped sandstone plateau, its steep sides and narrow passes making it a natural fortress that turned back attack after attack through the turbulent decades of the Difaqane and the wars with Boer and British forces. From that mountain he built the Basotho nation by diplomacy as much as defence, and today it is the country's most important heritage site, with his royal grave and those of later kings on the summit. Coming here is the clearest way to understand modern Lesotho: a guided walk climbs the original pass onto the plateau to the ruins and graves, while at the foot of the mountain a cultural village recreates San rock shelters and 18th- and 19th-century Basotho homesteads, with music, craft and food. It is an easy half-day from Maseru and pairs the history with a real sense of how Basotho life was lived. There is no ticketed event here, just a permanent site you visit and a local guide who brings its story alive.
