Malealea is a scattered mountain village in the western highlands of Lesotho's Mafeteng district, reached over the Gates of Paradise Pass, and the country's best-known base for pony trekking with Basotho guides into a landscape of gorges, rock art and remote hamlets.
Why here
Pony trekking is the classic way to travel Lesotho, and Malealea is the place most people do it. The Basotho pony, a hardy crossbreed brought to the mountains in the nineteenth century, is stout, calm and astonishingly sure-footed on the goat tracks and passes that link the villages, and for centuries it has been the everyday transport of a nation of horsemen. From Malealea Lodge, local Basotho guides lead rides that range from a couple of hours to multi-day trips sleeping in village huts, following paths to waterfalls, San rock-art shelters and viewpoints over the Makhaleng gorge. You do not need to be an experienced rider; the ponies are patient and the pace is walking, which makes this as much a cultural journey through working villages as an equestrian one. This sits under Horse Riding and Equestrian, the closest fit for a tradition that Basotho would simply call pony trekking. Evenings back at the lodge bring a village choir and band playing home-made instruments around the fire.
Best months
Trekking is possible year-round but most comfortable from spring to autumn; winter nights in the highlands are freezing and summer afternoons from December to February can bring thunderstorms. Rides go at a walk on sure-footed ponies, so beginners are fine, though multi-day trips mean long hours in the saddle and basic overnight stays in village huts with no electricity or running water. Bring warm and waterproof layers, sun protection and cash for guides and village stops. The altitude, mostly above 2,000 metres, means strong sun and cold shade.
Getting there & around
Malealea is about two to three hours from Maseru, the final approach over the Gates of Paradise Pass on a road that is mostly tarred with a rough last section; a normal car manages it in dry weather. Malealea Lodge is the hub for all trekking and works with the community-run Malealea Development Trust, so guides, ponies and village overnight stops are arranged through it. Book multi-day treks ahead so guides and village accommodation can be organised. Carry cash, as there are no card facilities once you leave the main towns.
