Why go
The Roof of Africa is the oldest and most feared hard-enduro race on earth, first run in 1967 and known to riders simply as the Mother of Hard Enduro. Over three days it sends competitors 250 to 350 kilometres across the Maloti Mountains at altitudes from 1,400 metres to above 3,000 metres, up rock gardens, dry waterfalls and passes that break machines and riders in equal measure, and it now forms a round, often the finale, of the FIM Hard Enduro World Championship. The 2026 edition runs from 24 to 26 September, based near Matsieng about 45 minutes from Maseru, the capital and the natural gateway for spectators and support crews. This sits under Motorcycle Adventure Touring, the closest fit for an event that is really elite off-road racing rather than touring, and it is flagged as such. For visitors it is a rare chance to watch world-class hard enduro in one of the most dramatic mountain arenas anywhere, with the added draw that the same passes and villages can be explored more gently by bike or 4x4 before and after the race.

What to expect
The Roof of Africa is held over three days in late September, at the end of the dry Southern-Hemisphere winter when the mountain tracks are firm and clear. The 2026 race runs 24 to 26 September. Riding it is for expert hard-enduro competitors only; the terrain from 1,400 to over 3,000 metres is brutal and the altitude thins the air for engines and bodies alike. Spectating needs no skill, but reaching the special stages means high, rough tracks and cold, exposed weather that can swing from sun to sleet. Dates shift by a few days each year with the FIM calendar.
Getting there & around
Maseru has Lesotho's main border crossing with South Africa and Moshoeshoe I International Airport, and is about an hour from the Matsieng area where recent Roof of Africa editions start and finish. Spectators base themselves in Maseru or nearer the course and reach the special stages on high, rough tracks that often need a high-clearance or 4x4 vehicle. Book accommodation early, as the race fills local lodges, and confirm the year's exact route and viewing points through the official event site, since stages move around the highlands. Bring warm, waterproof clothing for the exposed mountain sections.
