Trekking / Hiking in Tsehlanyane

Lesotho · Southern Africa

Tsehlanyane National Park protects a high valley in the northern Maloti Mountains where the Hlotse River runs through one of Lesotho's few surviving stands of indigenous che-che bush. A network of marked trails climbs from the valley floor over passes above 2,600 metres, most of them starting at Maliba Lodge.

Why here

Tsehlanyane is the most accessible good walking country in Lesotho, a national park in the northern Maloti with a proper network of marked trails rather than the open cross-country navigation the highlands usually demand. From the valley floor on the Hlotse River, routes range from the gentle Lower Trail to the Black Pool, an easy riverside walk, up to the demanding 16-kilometre Circular Route that climbs above 2,600 metres for long views over the Maluti range and down onto the che-che bush, one of the last indigenous woodlands left in a country that is otherwise almost treeless. The park is quiet, the air is thin and clean, and you share the paths with little more than the odd herd boy and his dogs. Most walkers base themselves at Maliba Lodge, Lesotho's only five-star mountain ecolodge, which sits at the trailheads and provides local guides who know the routes and can arrange the same trails on horseback. It is an easier, greener introduction to the Mountain Kingdom than the abseils and passes elsewhere, and a good base for multi-day walks deeper into the range.

Walking is best from spring to autumn; winter brings hard frost, occasional snow and very cold nights, while midsummer afternoons from December to February can bring thunderstorms. Trails are marked but the terrain is steep and rocky on the longer routes, and the whole park sits above 2,000 metres, so pace, water and sun protection matter. The 16-kilometre Circular Route is a full day for fit walkers with a long climb; shorter riverside trails suit families and beginners. A local guide adds route knowledge and is recommended for the higher loops.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Tsehlanyane is in northern Lesotho, reached from the Butha-Buthe and Leribe side on a road that is tarred most of the way to the park gate, with a rough final stretch best done in a high-clearance vehicle. Maliba Lodge, inside the park on the Hlotse River, is the main base and trailhead and arranges guides at reception; there is also a self-catering option and camping for tighter budgets. Day walks need no permit beyond park entry, but longer routes and horseback trips should be organised through the lodge or park guides. Bring layers, as valley and ridge temperatures differ sharply.

Outfitter

Maliba Lodge sits inside Tsehlanyane National Park on the Hlotse River and is Lesotho's only five-star mountain ecolodge. At least ten marked walking tracks radiate from it, from the gentle Lower Trail to the Black Pool up to the demanding 16-kilometre Circular Route that climbs above 2,600 metres for views over the Maluti range and its indigenous che-che bush. Experienced local guides lead hikes and can arrange the same routes on horseback, booked at reception.
