Canyoning in Semonkong
Semonkong, the Place of Smoke, is a remote highland trading town in the Maluti Mountains named for the spray of the nearby Maletsunyane Falls, which drop 204 metres in a single plunge and give the town its most famous adventure, the longest commercial abseil in the world.

The Maletsunyane Abseil at Semonkong is the longest commercially operated single-drop abseil in the world, a Guinness World Record at 204 metres set in 2005. You rope down a sheer basalt cliff right beside the Maletsunyane Falls, the spray drifting across the rock and Bearded and Cape vultures riding the thermals off the gorge below. No experience is needed. The day before the main descent you train on a 25-metre practice cliff near the lodge to learn the ropes and rig, so that by the time you step backwards off the 204-metre ledge the movements are familiar even if the drop never stops feeling enormous. More than seven thousand people have now done it. There is no dedicated abseil category on the site, so this sits under Canyoning as the closest fit, but it is pure vertical rope work beside a waterfall rather than a canyon descent. Semonkong itself, reached over high passes about four hours from Maseru, is worth the trip on its own for the falls, the pony trekking and a town where ponies still outnumber cars.
Best months
The abseil runs across most of the year but is best from spring to autumn; deep winter mornings at this altitude are bitterly cold and the falls are fullest after the summer rains from November to March. The experience is split over two days, a 25-metre training abseil first, then the 204-metre waterfall descent, so plan an overnight at Semonkong rather than a day trip. It suits anyone reasonably fit and comfortable being talked through heights; the guides rig and control the rope throughout. Weather in the mountains changes fast, so descents can be delayed for wind or storms.
Getting there & around
Semonkong is roughly a four-hour drive from Maseru, the last stretch on gravel over mountain passes, and most visitors base themselves at Semonkong Lodge, which runs the abseil and can arrange transfers. A normal car reaches the town in dry weather, but a high-clearance vehicle is safer, and the road can be slow or difficult after heavy rain or snow. Bring warm layers even in summer, as mornings on the cliff are cold. Book ahead, as the two-day abseil format and small guide team limit numbers.
