Music & Culture Festivals in April

FEMUA, the Festival des Musiques Urbaines d'Anoumabo, is the biggest urban-music festival in Cote d'Ivoire and one of the largest in francophone Africa. It was founded in 2008 by A'Salfo, leader of the group Magic System, and named for Anoumabo, the working-class Abidjan neighborhood the band came from. Each spring it fills stages across the city with Afrobeats, coupe-decale, rap and reggae from Ivorian headliners and pan-African stars, wrapped around a strong social mission of free community concerts, school and health projects, and a yearly theme debated across the week. The 2026 edition, its eighteenth, ran from late April into early May with a line-up reaching from Youssou N'Dour to Fatoumata Diawara. For a first-time visitor it is the loudest, most generous window into Abidjan's music culture, a festival built by one of the country's biggest bands to give back to the quarter that raised it.

The Full Moon Party has run on Haad Rin beach every month since the 1980s, and it is still the clearest example anywhere of a beach party that grew into a full travel-circuit institution rather than a one-off event. Tens of thousands of people gather monthly for a night of open-air sound systems, fire shows, and body paint stretching the length of the beach, with almost no formal structure beyond a beach-entry fee. It works precisely because it never became overly commercialized: no advance tickets, no assigned areas, just a beach, a full moon, and whichever sound systems set up that month. For a specific kind of traveler, it remains the single most reliable big night out in Southeast Asia.

Kaunas Jazz has been the Baltics' benchmark jazz festival since 1991, when it launched just after Lithuania restored its independence. Every late April it takes over Kaunas, the interwar capital and now a UNESCO City of Design, with headline concerts in the National Kaunas Drama Theatre and other halls, spilling out to Vilnius, Palanga and smaller towns across the season. The 2026 edition marks the festival's thirty-fifth anniversary. It is programd with an ear for both the American mainstream and European and Baltic players, and paired with an academic conference, so it rewards people who want to follow the music seriously rather than just drop in for a night.

Jazz Fest is the definitive American roots-music festival: two spring weekends at the Fair Grounds where jazz, gospel, blues, zydeco, Cajun, and brass bands share equal billing since 1970. It is run by a nonprofit foundation whose proceeds fund Louisiana music education all year, and the heritage half of the name is programd as seriously as the music: Louisiana food culture, craft traditions, and parading krewes fill the infield. Some 475,000 people attended the 2026 edition. It complements the city's year-round live-music scene rather than replacing it; come for the festival, stay for the clubs the rest of the week.

The Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival is the island's flagship cultural event, staged each spring with its main concerts at the Pigeon Island National Landmark, the old British fort on the peninsula across the causeway from Rodney Bay. Running since the early 1990s, it grew into one of the Caribbean's best-known music festivals and now spreads a full arts program, theater, visual art, fashion and food, around a line-up that mixes international jazz, R&B and soul headliners with Saint Lucian and wider Caribbean acts. The setting is the draw as much as the music: a grassy natural amphitheater between two hills that were once gun batteries, the stage backed by the sea and the sunset, with the audience spread on the slopes. Beyond Pigeon Island the festival takes over venues across the north of the island for late shows and smaller sets, so the whole Rodney Bay area moves to it for the run. For a week each spring this is where the region's musicians and its music-lovers come.
